Headaches tell us a lot about the body in Traditional Chinese Medicine! The location of the pain gives clues about the root cause:

Occipital Headaches: Often linked to the Bladder and Kidney meridians. These can stem from cold invasion or tension in the neck and shoulders. Gua sha and acupuncture work wonders.

Frontal Headaches: Associated with the Stomach and Large Intestine meridians (digestion). Overthinking, diet imbalance, or dampness in the body are common culprits.
Consistent acupuncture alongside nutritional recommendations and herbal supplements would be ideal for long term relief.

Temporal Headaches: Connected to the Gallbladder and Liver meridians. Stress, anger, or excess heat (hello, migraines!) may trigger pain in this area. This may also connect to hormonal headaches (which usually occur more in the eyes or one side). Moving that Liver Qi is key with continued massage or acupuncture sessions (especially in luteal phase) and herbs.

Top of the Head: This is a classic sign of Liver or Kidney imbalance, often tied to internal wind or a deficiency in vital energy. These take more time to treat and can often come from long term medication use or deep exhaustion.

In TCM, every headache is unique-so treatment is too!
Acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle adjustments aim to restore balance at the root.

*Astragalus* Huang Qi_ 黄芪 in TCM — is one of the most used "Qi tonics."

In Traditional Chinese Medicine it’s been used for 2000+ years, mainly to support the body’s defenses and energy.

Actions of Astragalus/Huang Qi:

1. Tonifies Qi and strengthens the Spleen. TCM idea: Qi = your vital energy. When Qi is low you feel fatigue, weak digestion, loose stools. Astragalus is used to "lift" Qi and help with low energy and poor appetite.

2. Supports Wei Qi - the protective/defensive layer. Wei Qi is like your outer immune shield. Astragalus is used to help the body resist colds, flu, and frequent infections. Often taken before cold season, not during an acute fever.

3. Lifts Yang and helps with "sinking" Used for prolapse, chronic diarrhea, or low blood pressure patterns where Qi "sinks". It has a mild "lifting" action.

4. Promotes wound healing and tissue repair. Topically and internally in formulas. TCM uses it to help sores heal slower to close and to support recovery after illness/surgery.

5. Tonifies blood indirectly.
Often paired with herbs like Dang Gui to help with fatigue and pale complexion from Qi + Blood deficiency.

A lot of people think acupuncture is just about needles or relaxation.
But what we're really doing is helping the body regulate itself better - through the nervous system, circulation, and whole-body communication.

That's why acupuncture can support:
•chronic pain
•stress and anxiety
•digestion and gut health
•hormone balance
•sleep and energy
It's not about chasing symptoms.
It's about helping your body respond differently.
At Stayton Acupuncture, every treatment is tailored to what your body actually needs - because there's no one-size-fits-all approach.

If you're dealing with pain, stress, fatigue, hormone imbalance, or digestive issues, acupuncture can help your body reset and function better.
