“About a year ago, my quality of life began to decline because of debilitating knee pain. I had experienced both a ski accident and, later, a motorcycle accident. My hikes were getting shorter and less frequent, and I needed recovery time after each one just to manage the pain. I knew waiting and resting were no longer an option, so I started searching for a solution. I wanted to find the best orthopedic surgeon money could buy.

At the gym, I found it easy to spot folks on crutches or wearing knee braces, so I started talking to them and asking about their outcomes. I found that some people had used the Steadman folks and had positive experiences, while a few had less-than-satisfactory stories to share. I wanted to expand my research, so I spoke to several physical therapists from different clinics in the area, as well as my general surgeon. Every one of them said Dr. Aaron Black would be their first choice if they needed an ACL or knee repair. After weighing all of these experiences, I decided to meet with Dr. Black to see what he was like and whether he was the person I would trust with my knee repair.

Dr. Black had a very kind and relaxed demeanor and was eager to share his findings and solutions in a detailed way. He patiently educated me and explained all of my options. He laid out multiple procedures, from the most invasive to the least invasive, then explained the recovery timeline and, ultimately, what I could expect after a full recovery from each.

Now that the dust has settled and I’ve completed my surgery and physical therapy, just one word sums up my experience: Outstanding!!

I’m hopeful my story, no matter which surgeon you choose, inspires you to move forward. Waiting had real costs for me—significant muscle loss, decreased overall fitness, and, ultimately, something unrecoverable: quality time spent doing the things I love.”

A MUST WATCH: For most of his life, motorcycles weren’t just a hobby for TJ Knight — they were part of who he was.

But after a traumatic injury during his time in the Coast Guard, TJ spent the next 20 years living with chronic back pain. What started as a split-second impact on the Columbia River slowly became a condition that affected every part of his life — from commuting to work and mowing the lawn, to his relationships, his personality, and the activities he loved most.

In this short documentary, TJ shares the long road from injury to recovery, and what it meant to find a treatment option that aligned with the life he still wanted to live.

With the help of Dr. J. Alex Sielatycki at Steamboat Orthopaedic & Spine Institute (SOSI), TJ underwent spine surgery designed to preserve motion and help him get back to doing what he loves. Eight months later, he was back on his dirt bike — something he once thought might never happen again.

This month, Dr. Adam Wilson has been appointed as the new Head Team Physician for the Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team!

This is incredible news for both SOSI and Dr. Wilson, who has been caring for U.S. Ski & Snowboard athletes since 2016. Over the past decade, he has traveled with the snowboard team to training camps and competitions across the United States and around the world, providing expert orthopedic care to elite athletes.

In his new role, Dr. Wilson will serve as the lead physician for the Hydro Flask U.S. Snowboard Team, overseeing athlete care, injury management and return to sport decision making throughout the season.

This appointment follows the retirement of longtime team physician Dr. Tom Hackett after more than 20 years of service and reflects Dr. Wilson's dedication to helping athletes perform at their highest level.
