Next up in our Small Starts for a Smoother School Year series: lunchbox practice! 🍎

Before the first cafeteria day, pack a practice lunch or snack at home and let your child try opening everything on their own.

Containers, wrappers, water bottles, utensils and little zipper bags can all be trickier than they look, especially when the lunchroom is loud and busy.

A quick dry run helps kids practice fine motor skills, problem-solving and independence before it’s go time.

August is here, so we’re kicking off our last summer tip series: Small Starts for a Smoother School Year! Each Monday this month, we’ll share one simple way to help kids ease back into school routines.

First up: practice one small routine. 🎒

Pick something simple your child can do every day this week, like putting their backpack by the door or getting dressed before breakfast.

Don’t worry about the whole morning yet. One little routine, practiced again and again, can help school days feel more familiar before the first bell rings.

Check back next Monday for our next tip! 💡

Last up in our Little Steps Toward Independence series: asking for help! 🙋

Sometimes independence looks like doing it alone. Sometimes it looks like knowing when you need support.

This week, try modeling that out loud. Let your child hear you ask for help too: “I can’t reach that. Can you hand it to me?” or “I’m stuck. Can you show me?”

Asking for help is a big skill. It shows self-awareness, communication and confidence which are all important steps toward doing more on their own.

In the sensory gym, play has a purpose. 😊 Ms. Brooke and Emmy used the platform swing to build core strength, balance, grip strength and working memory by remembering which animals to grab next. Strong bodies, busy brains and lots of fun!

ADLs, or Activities of Daily Living, are the everyday tasks kids do to care for themselves and participate in daily routines. They’re also exactly what our Little Steps Toward Independence tips have been all about!

Think getting dressed, brushing teeth, washing hands, using utensils, opening lunch containers, cleaning up toys and getting ready to leave the house.

Occupational therapists help kids build the skills, confidence and strategies that make these daily jobs feel more manageable. 🧦

For our next Little Step Toward Independence: playing with less help! 🛝

During playtime, wait a few seconds before stepping in. Let your child try to set up the game, solve a small problem, take a turn or figure out what comes next.

You’re still nearby if they need support, but a little space gives kids room to practice problem-solving, flexibility and sticking with something even when it gets tricky.

Playdates are more than fun. They’re a great way for kids to practice social skills they’re building in therapy, like taking turns, starting and staying with a topic, asking for clarification, reading body language and advocating for themselves.

They can be helpful for parents too. Connecting with another family who understands what you’re working through can make the journey feel a little less lonely.

If your child receives therapy at Little Hands and you’d like to be matched with another family for a playdate, let your therapist know! 🧩
