Understanding dementia progresses over time

Dementia is a progressive condition that affects memory, thinking, and daily functioning. It usually develops slowly over several years.
Early recognition, medical care, and family support can help improve quality of life for people living with dementia.

Early stage: Mild memory problems, difficulty finding words, and occasional confusion, but the person can still live independently.

Middle stage: Memory loss becomes more noticeable. People may struggle with daily tasks, forget familiar faces, and need increasing support from caregivers.

Late stage: Severe memory loss and physical decline. The person may lose the ability to communicate, move independently, or care for themselves. Progression is not always a straight line. Some days may be better than others. As dementia changes, the caregiver’s focus gradually shifts from helping the person do things as they once did to adapting care to meet them where they are now.

Abilities may change, but the need for dignity, comfort, reassurance, belonging, and connection remains.
