Happy Myth Busting Monday! π
Myth: Avoiding the things that make you anxious is the best way to cope. π«
Truth: Avoidance gives anxiety exactly what it wants β and makes it stronger over time. π
We get it. When something feels scary or overwhelming the most natural thing in the world is to stay away from it. Skip the social event. Call in sick. Take the long route. Avoid the conversation. In the moment avoidance feels like relief.
But here is what is actually happening underneath the surface.
Every time you avoid something that triggers anxiety you are sending a message to your brain β this thing is dangerous and I cannot handle it. And your brain listens. It files that away and the next time that situation comes up the anxiety comes back even stronger than before. The world gets a little smaller. The list of things to avoid gets a little longer.
Over time avoidance does not reduce anxiety. It feeds it.
The research is clear on this β the most effective way to reduce anxiety long term is gradual exposure. That means gently and intentionally moving toward the things that trigger anxiety rather than away from them. Not all at once. Not recklessly. But step by step with the right support.
This is not easy. But it is one of the most powerful things you can do to take your life back from anxiety.
