Tomorrow is the Democratic Primary here in CT.
As you know, I am stoked for Josh Elliott to be our next governor.

Here is one more reason - his disability platform is the most ambitious and progressive in the state by a WIDE margin!

Crafted by real disabled people and policy experts alike, this platform has set the bar. The disabled population deserves a governor who will fight to bring our rights into the 21st century, and who treats us with dignity.

So get out and vote tomorrow! If you have any questions, hit me up!

You may or may not remember that last year I was appointed as a Justice of the Peace! It was such an honour.

I've been an ordained minister since 2020 and have officiated a few weddings, but am super excited to do even more! Especially q***r weddings. So if you're looking to get hitched and want a beautiful, authentic, one-of-a-kind ceremony, hit me up!

And if you're a q***r couple and you're eloping or doing a very intimate ceremony up this way, chat with me about my collaboration with Shutter In A Compass Photography ! We're such a great team and our dream is to offer the q***r community the most beautiful days of their lives πŸ₯°πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

Tonight's K-12 Building Committee meeting is meeting at 5pm in the Human Services building, NOT the Police Department Community Room (scheduling conflict). Please join us!

Human Services is located directly across the street from the Police Department. Hopefully the lovely folks that enable the recording of our meetings will still be able to set up and make our meeting accessible to the public.

Of course, to ask your most pressing questions and ensure that you see everything, show up irl if you can! We're a fun bunch, I promise πŸ™‚

Regular reminder that the emergency pull cords in public bathrooms should ❌ NEVER be tied up or around things. It renders them useless.

These are for if someone becomes incapacitated and needs emergency/urgent assistance. For instance, if they have fallen. But if the cord is tied up, it can't be activated by the person in crisis, leaving them alone and in peril.

If you see a cord tied up, please always untie it and leave it free hanging. If you want to go the extra step, you can speak to an employee/manager at the establishment and let them know about the issue. Usually this is done by cleaning staff who have never thought about it and are just trying to do their job. But one kind word can change or even save someones life.

New "Thoughts and Rambles" segment on the Substack - more of a classic "blog" feel, less of an academic article feel. If that piques your interest, then good news! First "thought and ramble" called "Manifestation" just dropped.

This piece is not paywalled! 😎

Every week I try and call my legislators about something that matters to me.
This week I called about the CLARITY Act.

Specifically, I asked my federal Senators to oppose H.R. 3633, the Digital Market Asset Clarity Act. It's a broad, sweeping piece of crypto legislation which is (unsurprisingly) supported by several different crypto companies. It would gut investor protections which have been on the books since the Great Depression, and replace robust SEC oversight with a more "hands off" regulating body. It would also eliminate dozens of state-level consumer fraud protections.

Law enforcement have warned that it would hinder investigations and make it harder to catch money launders. It also has SERIOUS conflict of interest problems, considering the Trump families est. $2.3 billion from crypto ventures/meme coins, yet his administration being one of the bill's loudest champions. Provisions to address these conflicts have repeatedly been sidelined.

This legislation puts consumers and our entire financial system at risk while doing NOTHING to stamp out corruption. Classic Trump administration move.

So, as always, I encourage you to call your legislators and let them know how you feel about this. If making a call feels intimidating, the free app 5 Calls (from whom I took much of this script) really helps.

It's been an amazing and I so appreciate all of y'all taking the time to engage with all the content I've been putting out over the past 20 days or so (I know I didn't get started on the first of the month).
So I want to end this whole series with one final tip, one final PSA, one final word of encouragement.

The biggest and most simple way that you can be an ally, a supporter to your disabled friends and community members, is this: When you see ableism, whether it's inaccessibility, ableist language or making disability/disabled folx the butt of the joke, people questioning other's disability, or anything else we've discussed, CALL IT OUT. Every damn time.

Unwrap the emergency pull cords in bathrooms that get looped over the grab bars.
Tell your friends that their ableist language isn't okay.

Call people out RIGHT THEN when they exhibit ableist behavior or language.
When you come across inaccessibility, point it out to someone who is in a position of responsibility. Also to others, because !

On the other hand, when you see accessibility and inclusion happening, CELEBRATE IT! Not because we should throw a party for the bare minimum being met, but because the more positive feedback people get for doing what's right, the easier it makes to keep doing what's right.

And of course, Keep asking questions and learning, and keep and consuming digital media, books, articles, movies, and more by actual disabled creators and featuring disabled characters!

Thank you all for being amazing. I love you so much!

I am so excited to get to vote for a governor who isn't visibly repulsed by the sight of disabled people!

I've known Josh Elliott for many years now, and he has only ever gone out of his way to listen to me, be kind to me, and make time for me. He cares deeply for the people of Connecticut (and beyond), and puts his voting record where his mouth is.

I am honoured not only to get to vote for him in the primaries on August 11, but also to be heading up his disability policy team! He has always had good instincts when it comes to how to best serve our community, but he doesn't rely on that. He speaks to us - actual living, breathing disabled humans about what would best serve us. What we need and want - and lets lived experience help inform his policy decisions.

This is such a huge green flag from someone running for Governor, or any leadership position. Not pretending to be the end-all-be-all, but listening and serving. Gosh, I can't wait to cast my vote!
