🎉 Exciting news! Last week, we officially broke ground on the expansion of our Stony Brook Children's Pediatric Emergency Department: https://bit.ly/4flcqjm

This expansion will help meet the growing demand for pediatric emergency care across our region, ensuring more children and families have access to the highest level of care close to home when they need it most. Thank you to the many teams, partners and supporters who helped make this milestone possible as we continue building a healthier future for Long Island's children and families.

Located in Hampton Bays, the Stony Brook Medicine Regional Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center is the first and only dedicated tick-borne disease clinic in the Northeast, providing specialized care for both adults and children. From tick bites and early symptoms to diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing support, our infectious disease experts help guide patients through every step of their care journey.

The CDC estimates that approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease each year. During Lyme Disease Awareness Month, we’re proud to spotlight the Center and our commitment to advancing research, expanding access to expert care, and supporting patients across the East End and beyond.

Meet baby Jack! 👋

Born at just 33 weeks, Jack spent 22 days in our NICU, facing early challenges with breathing, feeding and temperature regulation. And yet through every hurdle, Jack showed incredible strength. From coming off respiratory support to celebrating his first Halloween without a feeding tube, every milestone was a victory worth celebrating.

His mom, Jeanine, chose Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for delivery because of our NICU, trusting that even in the midst of fear and uncertainty, Jack would be in the best hands. That trust was met with compassionate care every step of the way, from answering late-night questions to celebrating every win, big and small, alongside Jack and his family.

One moment that will always stand out for Jack’s family: walking into Jack’s NICU pod and hearing Dr. Muz say there was a surprise… Jack was no longer on respiratory support!

Today, Jack is six months old and thriving - a true little fighter. 💪

Earlier this month, our community showed up in a BIG way for the third annual St. James 5 Mile Challenge and 5K Fun Run/Walk! 👟💪

828 participants - including Milana’s Crew ❤️ - came together to help build Suffolk County’s first Ronald McDonald House at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Together, we raised more than $123K to support Ronald McDonald House Long Island and help families stay close while their children receive care. 👏

School refusal is a, serious, emotionally driven issue where children and teens experience extreme anxiety about attending school, leading to regular absences or difficulty staying in school.

The good news? Early intervention can make a BIG difference. Through the Stony Brook Medicine's CARE initiative, families and schools are working together to help children gradually and successfully return to the classroom. The earlier we recognize the signs and provide support, the better the outcome for a child’s well-being, education and future.
