"Smoking is significantly associated with an increased risk of multiple vision-threatening ocular diseases."

A recent large-scale study of over 12 million patients found that smoking significantly increases the risk of EVERY major sight-threatening eye disease!

• Smokers had higher risk across ALL major eye conditions studied
• Up to 2–2.6x higher risk of certain cataracts and inflammatory eye disease
• Nearly 2x higher risk of macular degeneration (AMD)
• Increased risk of glaucoma, retinal vascular occlusions, and optic nerve damage
• Even diabetic eye disease risk was elevated

💡 Why this matters:
Smoking damages the eyes through oxidative stress, reduced blood flow, and direct toxicity to retinal and optic nerve tissues.

Smoking doesn’t just affect your lungs and heart—it can permanently impact your vision. If you or a loved one smoke, this is one of the most preventable risk factors for vision loss.

At Independence Again Low Vision, we’re here to help protect and maximize your vision at every stage.
