Mr. Roy Wayne Creed, 92 of Mount Airy, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving and supportive family on Wednesday morning, June 17, 2026. He was born May 22, 1934, in Surry County to the late John Banner “Johnnie” Creed and Hazel Nina “Nannie” Davis Creed. Mr. Creed proudly served our country in the US Army and retired from Westinghouse after many years of dedicated service. Mr. Creed loved to play bluegrass music with the group The Country Boys. Surviving Mr. Creed are his daughter, Debi McHone and Richard Whitley; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim Creed and Michelle, Danny Creed and Lori, and Michael Creed and Sheila; grandchildren, Zane Creed, Samantha McHone, Zach and Lauren Creed, Maddie Creed, Laken Creed, Luke Creed, and Billy Creed; great-grandsons, Tyree Creed and Henry Creed; several nieces and nephews; and by many more family and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Creed was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Bobbie Ruth Macey Creed, four sisters, Trudy Faye Creed, Lola Frances Creed, Fannie Elizabeth “Lizzie” Creed Carpenter, and Mae Ruth Creed Clifton; an infant brother; and by three more brothers, Bernie Hampton Creed, Ralph James Creed, and Johnnie Ernest Creed. A graveside service will be held Monday, June 22, 2026, at 3:00pm in the Creed Family Cemetery with Pastor Mark Mayes officiating. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard, Pilot Mountain Post 9436 and Mt. Airy Post 2019. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1:30 - 2:30pm. Mr. Franklin “Frank” Raymon Dollyhite, 89 of Mount Airy, passed away on Wednesday morning, June 17, 2026, at Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy. He was born November 26, 1936, in Stokes County, to the later Lacy Earnest Dollyhite and Hester Leora Pike Dollyhite. He was a member of Slate Mountain Baptist Church. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 65 years, Frances Bowman Dollyhite of the home; son, Franklin Raymond “Junior” Dollyhite, Jr.; a sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Bobby Ray Lambert; a sister-in-law, Jacqueline “Jackie” Dollyhite; and several other family and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dollyhite was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Denise Annette Dollyhite; two sisters, Patty Jean Dollyhite and Angeline Hester Dollyhite Jessup; and by a brother, Charles Dollyhite. The funeral service will be held on Monday June 22, 2026, at Slate Mountain Baptist Church at 2:00pm with Pastor Chris McMillian officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Unconditional love. It is something we all hope to receive, yet rarely give. Brenda Terry Owens was the epitome of unconditional love. Regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation, she loved you with her whole heart. Her smile and her immeasurable empathy extended far beyond what this tiny mountain woman could have ever imagined.

Brenda Terry Owens was born to Arley and Geraldine Terry on August 22, 1945, in Meadows of Dan, Virginia. The middle of five children, Brenda lived a childhood of farming, laughter, and family. She had a deep love for her childhood home in Meadows of Dan, recounting cherished memories of fried apple pies, quilting, and music. After graduating from Meadows of Dan High School in 1963, she attended Draughon Business School in Winston-Salem, where she earned her degree with highest honors in keypunch and office machines. Later, she worked at a telephone company as a long-distance operator. In Winston-Salem, she lived in a boarding house where the girls lived upstairs and the boys lived downstairs. One boarder mentioned his cousin in the Air Force whom he wanted to introduce to her. Jerry Owens stepped into her life in January of 1964, and they never parted until her passing sixty-two years later. Undoubtedly…true love.

Once settled in Mount Airy, Brenda and Jerry raised their two children, Shannon and Shelli, in what the children often refer to as a golden childhood. Brenda worked tirelessly at Proctor Silex, Pine State, York Oil, Amerigas, and Northern Hospital until her retirement. Upon retirement, she spent her days tending to and educating her only grandchild, Nevan Owens. He will always be her greatest joy. As a mother and grandmother, Brenda met each challenge with a smile and a quiet introspection that humbled those around her.

Brenda's church family began at Lambsburg Baptist and later moved to Fellowship Baptist of Mt. Airy. She took such care to love each of her Sunday school sisters. Little cards of affirmation and support are what the women of Lambsburg and Fellowship will remember most. Brenda was a devout Christian woman and the ultimate prayer warrior. Even after her paralysis, she knew she could still support her brothers and sisters in this world through prayer. It was ceaseless.

Brenda Owens passed away peacefully on the morning of June 17th, 2026, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home of Dobson. Her family was by her side until the end. During the last two years of in-home care, she and the family came to cherish her nurses and countless aides from Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. A very special friend, Betty Willard, also helped support and care for Brenda in her final years. All who came into contact with Brenda immediately felt the love and joy that emanated from this tiny woman, and all were changed by her.

Brenda was preceded in death by both her parents and a sister, Janice Harmon. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; children Shannon and Shelli; grandson Nevan; sisters Jackie (Nash) Lawson and Aleta Elvin; and a brother, Sheldon (Marie) Terry.

As you walk through this world, Brenda would want you to remember that it merely takes a smile, a nod, or a note to truly…quietly…shift the very nature of someone's life. Unconditional love. It is what we all hope to feel. Brenda Terry Owens was everything unconditional love was meant to be.

Ms. Barbara Jo Hott Childress, age 81, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living. Ms. Childress was born in Forsyth County, on October 12, 1944, to the late Robert Franklin Hott and Peggy Jean Smith Wood. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sibling and friend, who will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Ms. Childress was a woman of great faith, and had a voice of an angel, that loved to sing. She worked for many years as a technician in the emergency department at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Left to cherish her memories are daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy Jo White and Donald, Lisa Ellen Johnson and Scotty, Ann Marie Smith and Anthony; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jackie Lovejoy, Wyonetta Hickman. In addition to her parents, Ms. Childress was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Childress; her children’s father, Marvin Denny; sister, Jean. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Skyline Memory Gardens with Mrs. Lisa Johnson speaking. Per Ms. Childress wishes there will not be any formal visitation. Lowell Conrad Turman, 83, of Stuart, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Carroll County, Virginia, to the late Garfield Turman and Evelyn Puckett Turman, Lowell lived a life marked by hard work, kindness, service, and devotion to those he loved. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and carried the values of duty, humility, and integrity throughout his life.

Raised in a large family alongside five sisters and four brothers, Lowell learned early the importance of family, responsibility, and helping others. Those values remained at the center of his life.

A lifelong farmer and gardener, Lowell found joy in working the land. Whether tending his garden, caring for his farm, or helping a neighbor in need, he was happiest outdoors with his hands busy and his heart full. He took pride in providing for his family and sharing the fruits of his labor with others.

Lowell was also a talented woodworker who enjoyed creating with his hands and sharing his craftsmanship with family and friends. He took great pleasure in collecting coins and was always eager to share the stories, history, and treasures he had gathered over the years. His hobbies reflected his appreciation for patience, tradition, and the simple joys of life.

More than anything, Lowell loved his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a cherished grandfather whose steady presence, wisdom, and gentle nature touched generations. Known for his deep kindness and willingness to help anyone, he cared deeply for others and left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Lowell is survived by his beloved wife, Sue Turman, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and faith. He is also survived by his three children, Kenneth Turman (Cheri), Susan Taylor (Scott), and Jason Turman (Mandy).

He was a proud grandfather to Faith (Zack), Matysan, Christian (Chloe), Morghan, Mackenzie, Matthew, Bryson, and Caydon, all of whom brought him tremendous joy and pride.

His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the land he cared for, and the countless acts of kindness he shared throughout his life. His gentle spirit, strong work ethic, and loving heart will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026, at Moody Funeral Service, Stuart, VA. Officiants, David Richardson and Wayne Moore. Interment immediately after at Bluemont Presbyterian Church, Hillsville, VA. Military rites will be provided by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

Ginger Lynn Kirkman Werner, 60, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 15, 2026, after a courageous ten year battle with cancer. Ginger was a force of nature - strong willed, and fiercely independent. To her family, she was the strongest person they had ever known, facing every challenge with unwavering faith and determination. She was a dedicated Credit Manager, highly respected for her work ethic. She enjoyed fine dining, shopping, traveling to the beach and mountains, and the pride she took in keeping her yard and property immaculate. She especially cherished the time she spent fishing with her father, Charles Kirkman. Though Ginger never gave birth to children, she raised her niece and nephew, Brianna Todd and Cody Swicegood, as her own. Lovingly known as “Gingi”, she adored Brianna’s children, Eleia Mayes, Luke Mayes, and Haley Todd, who were like grandkids to her and brought her immense joy. Ginger is survived by her beloved husband, Bill Werner; her sisters, Robin Osborne and Pepper Kirkman Mayes; her nieces and nephew, Emily Osborne, Dalton Mayes (Corinne), Alex Mayes (Abby), and Airel Young (Tyler); her mother-in-law, Mae Werner; her beloved dogs, Roscoe and Skye, and her cherished cats, Loki, Lane, Bell, and Nala. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Kirkman and Lynda Jo Barnes Kirkman; her sister, Candis Kirkman Swicegood; and her faithful companion dog, Ringo. Ginger’s strength, loyalty, and fierce love leave a legacy that will never be forgotten. She will be deeply missed and forever loved. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel with a memorial service officiated by Reverend Steven A. Smith to follow at 3:00 PM . Mr. Roy Ray Dunbar. Age 80, of Mt. Airy, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026 at Dunmore Plantation in Dobson. He was born on June 13, 1946 in Surry County to the late William Frank and Annie Snow Dunbar.

Mr. Dunbar was employed on 3rd shift at Russell Corporation for 29 years, retiring in 2008. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, gardening and nascar racing on Sunday afternoons. For years he enjoyed farming with his family on their to***co farm. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was known as a quiet man that never talked much but always had a smile on his face. Even when the dementia took his mind, it never took his spirit.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Penny Dunbar, Laurie Holderfield Wade (Doug); grandsons, Josh Holderfield (AJ), Bailey Holderfield (Rachel), Landon Wade; one great-granddaughter and four great-grandsons; sister, Virginia Louise Gwyn (Bill); brother, Donnie Dunbar (Pam); sister-in-law, Jo Ann Dunbar Johnson (Walter); several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Mr. Dunbar was preceded in death by a brother, Roger Dale Dunbar; son-in-law, Jeffrey Clifford Holderfield; nephew, Bradley Monroe Gwyn; special companion for over 30 years, Eula Grimes Martin.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026 at 2:30 PM at Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery with service conducted by Rev. Arlis Thomas. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 PM until the time to leave for the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mt. Airy. The family will receive friends at the home of Bailey and Rachel Holderfield.

On March 15, 1933, Thomas Wiley Clifton, Sr. was born to Amos Reed Clifton and Anna Lee Cruise Clifton of Stuart, Virginia. Thomas’ joke was that he had nine sisters and they each had a brother.

He lived a full life for the 93 years and 3 months he was on this earth.

Survivors include his only living sister, Lucy Nowlin of Stuart, Virginia; his wife of the home, Gayle Ann Clifton; five children and three step-sons; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Ms. Gracie Lillian Lawson Jones, 86 of Dobson, passed away Saturday morning, June 14, 2026, at Dunmore Plantation Assisted Living in Dobson, NC. She was born in Surry County, January 24, 1940, to the late Lester Everett Lawson and Jettie Viola Sawyers Lawson. She was of the Baptist faith. Ms. Jones loved to work with her flowers and garden. Ms. Jones is survived by three sons, Timothy Lawson, Paul Callas, and Kevin Jones, five grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eva and Stanley Meredith, and Edith Young; several nieces and nephews, and many more family and friends. In addition to her parents, Ms. Jones was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Ann Lawson Siegert; and by five brothers, Charles Everett Lawson, Garnett Gray Lawson, James Paul Lawson, Ransom Junior Lawson, and Wayne Ray Lawson.
