We hear this a lot—“sunscreen causes skin cancer, not the sun”—so let’s clear it up.

Skin cancers we treat today are often the result of sun exposure from decades ago, before daily SPF use was common.

We regularly see patients in their 60s–70s developing skin cancers from damage that happened in their 20s and 30s—often without sunscreen, or even using tanning oils that increase sun damage.

👉 The truth: the sun is the primary cause of skin cancer.

That said, not all sunscreens are created equal—and ingredient choice matters.

Ingredients to be mindful of:
⚠️ Oxybenzone
⚠️ Octinoxate
⚠️ Avobenzone (in some formulations)

Safer, dermatologist-recommended options:
✔ Zinc oxide
✔ Titanium dioxide

Mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin and provide broad-spectrum protection without absorbing into the body the same way some chemical filters do.

Here are safer ways to get that sun-kissed look:

☀️ Self-tanning lotions – Look for gradual, buildable formulas with DHA (dihydroxyacetone) as the active ingredient. This is the standard, FDA-approved ingredient that reacts with the top layer of your skin (not your DNA).

✨ Professional spray tans – A great option for even, natural color. Just be sure to:
✔ Choose a reputable provider
✔ Avoid inhaling the mist (use nose plugs/lip balm if offered)

🥕 Foods rich in beta carotene – Carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens can subtly enhance your natural tone over time

💧 Healthy skin = glowier skin – Hydration + gentle exfoliation go a long way

What to avoid ⚠️:
🚫 Tanning beds (significantly increase skin cancer risk)
