“My passion for caring for women comes from my own experience as a first-time young mother. I was a teen mom who felt completely unprepared for what was ahead. After delivering my first baby, he needed to be transferred to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit an hour away and without hesitation I joined him not long after. When I finally was able to be with my baby, I felt lost and alone. I did not receive any guidance on how to care for my baby, how to feed my child, or even a voice in decisions like breastfeeding from the hospital where he was transferred to. Instead of feeling supported, I often felt like a burden who then had to navigate how to take care of a newborn on their own in a place full of experienced nurses.

I became a labor and delivery nurse because I wanted to be the support I did not have. I am passionate about making sure every woman feels seen, heard, and guided; especially during moments that can feel overwhelming or uncertain.

What I find the most meaningful about caring for women is the opportunity to educate, empower, and support them in a way that respects their individual needs and choices. Whether it is helping a new mom learn how to care for her newborn, offering reassurance, or simply being present, I want my patients to know they are never alone.

I strive for the women in our community and or anyone who chooses Door County Medical Center to feel safe, supported, and confident in their care. While we may not have the volume of larger hospitals, it allows us the time to provide more personalized one to one care. I have worked at other hospitals and still chose to deliver my babies here at Door County Medical Center for time and time again. Now I get to work alongside those amazing nurses to give that exceptional care I got to witness and receive. I want every patient to leave knowing they were cared for, listened to, and supported every step of the way not only by myself, but by every nurse at Door County Medical Center.” - Destini Lyn Kruswick BSN, RN, DCMC Birthing Center
