Door County Medical Center now offers an even more complete behavioral health team—including local psychiatric care when it's needed.

For years, many residents had limited local access to psychiatric care. Thanks to the contributions from the Behavioral Health Campaign run by the DCMC Foundation, today, DCMC's behavioral health team includes psychiatrist Dr. Candace Cohen, who provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management for patients who may benefit from specialized care. Working closely with therapists, social workers, and primary care providers, she helps create treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. They can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and monitor how those medications are working.

Therapists — including licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and licensed clinical social workers — diagnose and treat mental health issues through evidence-based talk therapy approaches. Therapists do not prescribe medication, but they can collaborate with a psychiatrist or primary care provider if medication becomes part of your care plan.

Speak with your primary care provider about whether a referral to Dr. Candace Cohen may be appropriate for you.
