Granahan Coaching and Consulting

Granahan Coaching and Consulting I want to work with anyone who is willing to live a more conscious and awakened life.

Supporting young people and old people (like me) to know who they are, what drives them, and how their patterns of thinking and being serve or don’t serve them. Granahan Coaching and Consulting offers a variety of coaching, counseling and consulting programs to individuals, groups, and staff groups. My specialties for young adults include Academic Life Coaching for younger teens and The Enlightene

d Application, focused on helping high school students get to know themselves before having to make decisions about plans after high school. I help students understand their thinking and learning styles, their natural strengths, and their values. We examine their inner critic and look at ways to build resilience when it rears its ugly head. We also look at the role of leadership in their lives and how they want to take responsibility for the impact they have in the world. I also have a small counseling practice for youth, mostly those engaging in risk behaviors who want to explore the place these behaviors have in their life and how they are or are not working. My work with adults includes life coaching - really looking at what blocks you from what you want most in life. I work with artists and other creative folks, women looking to explore next steps after having been home with children, and folks who just want help bridging the gap from where they are to where they want to be. If you are an LICSW or LMHC candidate looking for clinical supervision or mentorship, I am available to support you, help you explore how you use yourself in your work, and what activates your strongest emotions. With regard to work groups, I have developed a number of training programs including team building, managing change, improving communication, coaching skills for non-coaches and a number of specialized clinical training for clinicians including clinical supervision, substance use and abuse, assessing suicidal ideation, disclosing an illness, and issues around gender identification, s*x, and s*xuality. I also love working with emerging leaders who want to explore the impact they currently have on their world, what they want their impact to be and how to take full responsibility for that impact. As both a leadership coach and a management consultant, we look at the challenges of middle management, managing up, supervising staff, and organizational culture.

Sitting at the airport and feeling really, really tired in such a beautiful way.

When you do inner work, you might notice fatigue. You might also notice increased energy. Both often happen.

Releasing beliefs makes room for your body to use energy the way it was meant to but building new neural pathways certainly makes the body work.

I’m in the throes of both.

I’ll share more but this week was incredible. I’m just so full of clarity and love.

Have you ever wondered what the heck I’m talking about when I mention the Enneagram?

Maybe you have seen the memes and can’t draw the connections between a fun meme and the deep inner work to which I refer?

Join me on Tuesday, October 17th at 10:00am for a 90 minute talk about the Enneagram and what it means to work with it for personal development, self-discovery, and even trauma work.

I’ll cover the Centers of Intelligence and the Nine Types and we’ll talk about what it looks like when you’re Healthy in your Type and what it looks like without awareness of your Type.

Lots of time for Q&A, too.

Link in my bio to register or feel free to DM me, too.

Can you trust yourself? Yes.

Tonight, as Hattie sat in the rain, I was reminded of the one caveat to this directive. If not present, all bets are off.

Hattie has an issue with our . When she hears the beep, it takes her back to her invisible fence training. She can’t escape the association with getting zapped as a wee little pup.

So tonight, when she saw the pot coming out, she ran for the hills (or front yard, as it may be).

And so it is with you. Your nervous system makes associations all the time and sends messages to your brain and your heart that those associations are, in fact, accurate. Presence, the condition by which your body, heart, and mind all return to the present moment, is required for you to have the most accurate intelligence to make decisions, think clearly, and forge ahead. Without presence, the body, heart, and mind are somewhere else, making associations like Hattie does with the invisible fence. And they are likely not true. They are associations based on your nervous system’s history, usually from something that happened prior to you developing memory.

How does one get present? Presence is not a destination. It’s a condition that occurs from lots of practice. The more you practice, the more access you have to it. It is always there but gets foggy and thick when you’re stuck in the habitual patterns of your personality. How do you start practicing? I’m so glad you asked.

Be an observer of yourself. Notice:

🦋The sensation of water on your hands when you wash the dishes;
🦋Any tension or tightness in your body when you are angry or anxious
🦋The weight of your butt in the chair
🦋The different colors in the curtains in your office
🦋The sensation of your breath as you inhale and exhale

Most importantly, don’t judge it. Just be with what is in any given moment.

Do this as often as you can. When you do something to avoid the proverbial zap in your own life, you might notice how unnecessarily wet you’re getting despite the dry house ready to comfort you.

Want to know more? DM me and we’ll find a time to chat.

Shout out to who came through for the Granahan children once again! This is the third quilt I’ve had made by Jana to mark a 21st birthday. She pays close attention to what you want, what you want to highlight and the essence of the quilt you want to create. She holds that and makes suggestions as she sees fit. Every one she has handed to me has made me weep. They are just so beautiful (and high quality, usable, quilts!). This one has a fuzzy gray back which made Matty very happy!

Thank you, Jana ! One more to go!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MATTY!!!! 🚀💌💪🏽💃🏽💖👑🎉🎂🥳🎈

As many of you know, I've been in a certification course for the last two-plus years. This was one of the most significant undertakings of my life. It has changed me. I no longer apologize for the deep knowing I have that the Enneagram is the most efficient and effective framework for inner work and self-discovery. I no longer need you to agree with me or endorse it, but at the same time, if I am yearning for all of us to experience deep belonging in the world, I have a responsibility to share it.

This is for the Enneacurious. You don't have to have any clue what the Enneagram is or why it exists.

The final leg of my certification is to teach a class, using a very specific framework. If you know me, you know this is my kryptonite but I'm trying to embrace it because I also know that this is what I most need in my development as a teacher.

Here is the ask:

I'd like to find a time between now and the end of September to teach this module to a small group of Seekers. I have to film it (but don't have to film you!) and submit it for review. The only investment I ask from you is 90 minutes of your time.

The location, date, and time are TBD because some of this will depend on who is interested. Submitting your name does not commit you, but it lets me know you are interested.

The first FIVE people to reply with common dates will likely be the winners! So hurry and press "send"!

“Can you separate what you want and what matters to you from what other people want from you?”

This is the dilemma for many of us and this was the conversation I had with a client last week who identifies with Enneagram Type Nine.

Here’s the beautiful thing about our beloved Nines: their true nature is to bring people together. Nines understand at the cellular level that

💃🏽We are all connected
💃🏽We all belong
💃🏽We all matter

But here’s where things get wonky…As Nines lose Presence - or leave Presence (because it’s always there, just sometimes forgotten) - they drop out of the equation. They withdraw, disengage, or otherwise deprioritize themselves in an attempt to return to their True Nature.

The personality says, “everyone will feel peace if you focus on what matters to them, not you.”

But this isn’t true.

We need you, Nines. We need you to engage with your world. We need you to know that you, too, matter. And most of all, we need you to know that we won’t feel connection and belonging without you being a part of the whole.

So if this is you or this speaks to the Enneagram Type Nine in you, join the party. Engage with us. Tell us what matters to you. Because we all want wholeness both individually and collectively and we need you in it.

Want to know more? Drop a note in the comments or DM me and I’ll circle back to you. Because, well, you matter.

Your personality wants you to be an Enneagram type. And for many of us, our Enneagram type is how we see ourselves. But this isn’t who you are.
Your personality wants you to be a
👀Boss
👀Mediator
👀Perfectionist
👀Giver
👀Performer
👀Romantic
👀Observer
👀Trooper
👀Epicure

Think of it this way: you’re at a party with a bunch of people you don’t know. You head off to the party, dressed a certain way and when you get there, you put a particular persona forward. This is all done to make sure you get what you want from the people there. Chances are, you want to
🗣Feel respect
🗣Hold your own
🗣Be seen as you want
🗣Feel safe
🗣Be confident

So your personality kicks it into gear. This is what we mean when we say that each type has a way of manipulating those around them.

Here’s the thing: chances are you’re aware that you do this when you go to a party but you might not be aware that you do some version of this in your day-to-day life.

Which of these strategies feel familiar? Leave a note in the comments. I’ll go first. 🙋🏽‍♀️

If you haven’t listened yet, run don’t walk, to this podcast.

You might already know Emily, the founder and leader of the She Built This community and podcast, but Emily has been led to share her brilliance in a podcast that is a bit more niched than the one she’s on now.

What I most love about this first episode is that she walks us through the decision-making process that led her to launch another podcast. Here’s the thing: this 4-step process can be used not only for deciding whether to take on a new work project but also for deciding just about anything.

It’s a model that asks each of us to look at the paradox of:

💃🏻What’s the data?
What is being asked of me (or what am I asking of myself)?
💃🏻What’s my data?
Here’s where she gets into the juicy stuff:

1. Do I want to do this?
2. Do I have time to do this?
3. Can I do this?
4. Will I do this?

Just have a listen. Once you hear the clarity and wisdom Emily brings to this topic, you’ll wonder what else she has in store for us all on this new adventure.

How do I know? Because I’m an avid listener of the Podcast (and have even been a guest!) and I know Emily brings her lived experience as an entrepreneur as well as her experience guiding her clients through all kinds of topics centered around owning your own business and creating content that matters.

The link to listen is in my stories.

This may seem like no big deal, but this is just one, small way I use the Enneagram in parenting.

To be clear, it might come naturally to you to say something like this.

For me? Not so much.

I mean, if you asked me whether or not I assigned value to my kids based on their
🤮School performance
🤮Looks
🤮Athletic ability
🤮Weight
🤮Efficiency
🤮Humor
🤮Anything else

🧘🏽I’d say, “Of course not!”

But if I dig in and actually watch what I’m communicating, I’d argue there might be casual observers (ie: my own kids, even), who would disagree.

That’s not the parent I want to be.

Once I learned the Enneagram, a couple of things happened.

1. I could watch for some of the things that tend to show up in my personality, Enneagram type 7, and observe what is actually happening; and/or
2. I could see if my kids wanted to be typed and discover the “car wash” of sorts that they put my words through before they interpret them at the exit.

Guess what?

There were aspects of my personality that leaned into
🤨Judgment
🤨Attention on the space between what is and what is ideal
🤨Thinking and doing and far away from my heart

That last one is a doozy. It’s the one that separates me from my impact on the humanness of my people. The part that might not recognize that my words are put through a car wash. The part that might not know that I’m hurting someone.

So today, with my type 3 son, I wanted to be abundantly clear. I wanted to congratulate him and also let him know that it doesn’t matter to me. There are parts that matter to me, but not the parts that he might interpret as being about his self-worth.

And there you have it.

Want to know more about the Enneagram and parenting? Drop a comment. I’m cooking something up and would love to know who’s interested.
