Safety often feels like something we have to go out and find, or a set of circumstances we have to control. But as Gabor Maté reminds us, it isn't just about the absence of stress or difficulty. It’s about being connected.

When we feel connected: to ourselves, to our bodies, or to a trusted person: our nervous system finds a place to land. It’s the difference between navigating a storm alone and navigating it with a hand to hold.

In our work together, we don’t just talk about the things that feel heavy. We focus on building that internal and relational connection so that you have a steady place to return to, no matter what is happening around you. Relational healing starts with the simple presence of another human who truly sees you.

It’s a heavy feeling when something that happened years ago feels like it’s happening right this second.

With CPTSD, the clock doesn't always work the way we want it to. A sound, a smell, or even a certain tone of voice can pull you right back into a moment you thought you’d left behind. Your heart races, your breath gets shallow, and suddenly, you’re not in your living room anymore: you’re back there.

This isn't a flaw in who you are. It’s your body’s way of trying to keep you safe. It remembers the intensity of the past and stays ready, just in case. But living in a state of constant high alert is exhausting and isolating.

Grounding isn't about forcing yourself to "move on" or ignoring what you feel. It’s about gently reminding your nervous system that the threat isn't in the room with you right now. It’s about feeling the weight of your feet on the floor, the warmth of a cup in your hands, and slowly coming back to the present.

Healing is the process of building a relationship with safety, one breath at a time. We’re here to help you find your way back to the here and now.

"Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it's having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome." : Brené Brown

In our work together, we often talk about the difference between performance and presence. True healing isn't about getting it "right": it's about the brave act of showing up for yourself, even when things feel uncertain.

Ever been told to "just take a deep breath" when you’re feeling overwhelmed or triggered?

It’s common advice, but for many people dealing with trauma or chronic anxiety, it can actually feel frustrating or even make things worse.

Here’s why: trauma isn’t just a thought in your head. It’s a physiological response stored in your nervous system. When your body is stuck in a state of high alert, a deep breath can sometimes feel like trying to put a tiny band-aid on a deep wound. It doesn't reach the root of what’s happening in your body.

Somatic therapy is the missing piece. Instead of just talking about the past or trying to think your way into feeling calm, we look at the physical sensations where that stress is actually living. We work with the body’s natural language to release stored tension and help your system find real, lasting regulation.

It’s not about performing calm. It’s about being present with what is and giving your body the space it needs to settle.

Ever feel like your body is the enemy?

When we’re living with chronic stress or trauma, it can feel like our nervous system is a glitchy piece of software we’d love to trade in for a newer model. We want the version that doesn’t panic at a crowded grocery store or keep us awake at 3 AM.

But here’s the secret: it’s actually doing exactly what it was designed to do: keep you safe. It’s just working with an outdated map of your world.

Healing isn’t about trying to force a "new" system into place. It’s about building a compassionate relationship with the one you have. It’s learning to listen to the signals, understanding the "why" behind the reactions, and slowly teaching your body that it’s finally safe to land.

You're just in a process of re-learning yourself.

We often think about fitness for our muscles or our heart, but what about your nervous system?

Most of us only pay attention to our nervous system when it’s in crisis: like during a panic attack or total burnout. But what if we treated it like a muscle that needs regular training instead?

Welcome to the concept of Stress Fitness.

Just like hitting the gym builds physical strength, regular somatic practices and nervous system regulation build emotional resilience. It’s the shift from reactive Panic Mode to proactive Stress Fitness. By training your system through mindfulness, breathwork, and specialized therapy, you prepare your brain and body to handle life’s stressors before they feel like too much.

You don't wait for an injury to start moving; you train so you're resilient when the pressure hits. At Nicole Ponce Counseling, we use tools like EMDR and somatic therapy to help you build that long-term strength and find relief.

Are you ready to start your Stress Fitness journey? Let’s get to work: the gentle way.

Does it feel like your brain is running on old software?

If you’re feeling stuck, it’s usually because your nervous system is still trying to protect you using patterns that don’t fit your life anymore. To change this, we focus on three things:

First, we look at where these patterns started. Awareness is always where the shift begins.

Next, we build a practical toolkit: somatic and cognitive skills to help you manage things in the moment.

Finally, we create new, safe experiences so your body learns it doesn’t have to stay on high alert.

It takes time, but it's how we actually heal. If you're ready to start, let's do the work together.
