DAY 10: EAT THE RAINBOW

The color of a vegetable can give us clues about some of its natural plant compounds, but every color represents many nutrients, not just one.

Red vegetables may contain lycopene, anthocyanins, vitamin C, and other protective compounds. Think tomatoes, red peppers, and red cabbage.

Orange and yellow vegetables often contain carotenoids such as beta-carotene, along with vitamin C. Think carrots, pumpkin, yellow peppers, and sweet potatoes.

Green vegetables may provide chlorophyll, folate, vitamin K, lutein, magnesium, and many other nutrients. Think spinach, broccoli, kale, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts.

Blue and purple vegetables often contain anthocyanins and other polyphenols. Think purple cabbage, purple carrots, eggplant, and purple potatoes.

White and tan vegetables still matter. Garlic, onions, cauliflower, mushrooms, and turnips contain their own valuable vitamins, minerals, fibers, and plant compounds.

Do not make one color carry the entire responsibility. Eat a variety. Every color brings something different to the table.

DAY 9: GOOD FATS CAN HELP A MEAL SATISFY YOU

Have you ever eaten something that seemed like enough food, but you were hungry again almost immediately? Sometimes the meal lacked the combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fat that helps it feel complete and satisfying.

Fat slows the emptying of food from the stomach and can help a meal keep you satisfied longer. It also adds flavor and texture, which can make nourishing food more enjoyable.

Good fats may also support the intestinal environment indirectly. Omega-3 fats have been widely studied for their role in healthy inflammatory regulation, while olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados often appear in eating patterns associated with better overall health.

Try adding avocado to eggs, olive oil to vegetables, chia or flaxseed to a smoothie, walnuts to fruit, or salmon to a large colorful salad. Fat is not something you have to fear. Choose it intentionally and let it become part of a well-balanced meal.

DAY 8: GOOD FATS HELP YOU ABSORB NUTRIENTS

Some of the nutrients in your vegetables need fat to be absorbed well. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble. Carotenoids, which are colorful plant compounds found in foods such as carrots, tomatoes, spinach, and sweet potatoes, are also absorbed more effectively when eaten with some dietary fat.

This is one reason a completely fat-free salad is not necessarily the most nourishing choice. Adding avocado, extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, tahini, olives, or another quality fat can help your body receive more from the vegetables you are eating.

This does not mean you need to cover food in large amounts of oil. It means a balanced meal matters. Food components work together.

Nature did not give us nutrients in complete isolation. A colorful plate with vegetables, protein, fiber, and a healthy source of fat gives the digestive system a more complete package to work with.

DAY 7: GOOD FATS HELP BUILD YOUR BODY

Fat is not simply something your body stores. Healthy fats are part of the structure of every cell membrane in your body. They help protect organs, provide energy, support the brain and nervous system, and supply essential fatty acids the body cannot make on its own.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fats are both essential, but the type, quality, and balance of fats in your diet matter. Helpful sources include extra-virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, olives, and fatty fish such as salmon and sardines.

A healthy body needs fat. The conversation should not be about fearing every gram of fat. It should be about choosing nourishing fats while limiting heavily processed foods and repeatedly heated or degraded oils.

Good fats are not the enemy. They are part of the material your body uses to build, protect, communicate, and function.

DAY 6: YOUR BODY SPEAKS. ARE YOU LISTENING?

Your body speaks through patterns. Bloating after certain foods, feeling overly full, reflux, gas, abdominal pressure, constipation, diarrhea, changes in stool, food cravings, low energy, and discomfort are all information.

That does not mean every symptom has one simple cause. It means something in the process may need attention. Your body may be responding to how quickly you eat, what you eat, how much water you drink, your sleep, stress, movement, medications, hormones, food sensitivities, intestinal motility, or the coordination of the muscles involved in elimination.

Instead of becoming angry with your body, become curious about it. When does the symptom happen? What did you eat? Were you rushed? Were you emotionally upset? Had you slept? Had you moved your body? When was your last bowel movement?

Your body is not betraying you. It may be communicating that it needs support.

DAY 5: YOUR CORE AND YOUR GUT WORK TOGETHER

Your core is not just the muscles you see in the mirror. It includes deeper abdominal muscles, back muscles, the diaphragm, and the pelvic floor. Together, they help create stability and manage pressure inside the abdomen.

We have miraculous bodies!

During a healthy bowel movement, the abdominal muscles help create gentle pressure while the pelvic floor and a**l muscles must coordinate and relax. If these muscles are weak, overly tense, or poorly coordinated, elimination may become more difficult.

Movement also helps stimulate intestinal motility. Walking, diaphragmatic breathing, gentle twisting, pelvic tilts, bridges, and appropriately performed core exercises may help support circulation, mobility, posture, and bowel movement regularity. Research has also found that core-strengthening exercise can shorten colon transit time in some people with constipation.

The goal is not to constantly grip or tighten your stomach. A healthy core must know how to engage, release, breathe, and coordinate.

DAY 4: EATING NUTRIENTS AND ABSORBING NUTRIENTS ARE NOT THE SAME

You can eat nutritious food and still not receive everything that food contains. Before nutrients can help your body, food must be chewed, broken down by stomach acid and enzymes, mixed with bile, absorbed through the intestinal lining, and transported to the places where it is needed.

Carbohydrates are broken into simple sugars. Proteins are broken into amino acids. Fats are broken into fatty acids and other smaller components. Vitamins and minerals follow different pathways, and some need the presence of other nutrients to be absorbed effectively.

For example, vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble, which means dietary fat helps the body absorb them. Vitamin C can improve the absorption of iron from plant foods.

Slow down when you eat. Chew your food. Include a variety of whole foods, healthy fats, protein, fiber, herbs, fruits, and vegetables. What you absorb matters just as much as what you eat.

I'm thinking about you!

DAY 3: THE LARGE INTESTINE DOES MORE THAN HOLD WASTE

By the time food reaches the large intestine, most nutrients have already been absorbed by the small intestine. But the large intestine still has important work to do.

It receives water, fiber, minerals, bacteria, and material the body did not digest. It absorbs water and electrolytes, helps form stool, houses a large community of microorganisms, and moves waste toward elimination.

Gut bacteria also ferment certain fibers and create short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate. These compounds help nourish the cells lining the colon and participate in several important processes throughout the body.

Healthy elimination depends on more than simply eating fiber. The body also needs appropriate hydration, movement, nervous-system regulation, intestinal motility, and coordination among the abdominal muscles, re**um, a**l sphincters, and pelvic floor. Your large intestine is not just a storage container. It is a living and active part of your health.

Let me hear from you!

DAY 2: THE SMALL INTESTINE IS WHERE SO MUCH HAPPENS

I know we call the small intestine “small,” but it is about 20 feet long in an adult. This is where most digestion and nutrient absorption take place. Isn't that amazing?

This is how it works - food enters the small intestine after being partially broken down in the stomach. Digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile made by the liver help break carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into smaller parts the body can use ... then ...

Did you know that the inner surface of the small intestine contains millions of tiny fingerlike structures called villi, with even smaller microvilli covering them? These structures create an enormous surface area for absorbing nutrients into the blood and lymphatic system.

I know we can eat beautiful, nutrient-dense food, but our bodies must still digest it, absorb it, transport it, and use it. Nutrition is not only about what goes into your mouth. It is also about what your body can actually receive.

I believe in you! Let me hear from you!
