AND DISTRICT PICKS
The pre-season rankings will be on the AP wire
Monday, October 26, and also on the TABC website
www.tabchoops.org. The rankings are based
on all of the information that has been received
up to this point and are always a topic for
discussion and often a motivation for some teams.
The list of District Favorites, which predicts the
top four in each district will be up on the TABC
website on November 2. The weekly rankings will
appear on the TABC website beginning November
16 and will also be sent to media outlets via the
Associated Press.

UIL UPDATE

The UIL/Legislative Council voted to approve the gradual implementation of a 35-second shot clock in phases over the next six years. Class 5A and 6A high schools will be required to use the shot clock in all varsity contests beginning in the 2028-29 school year. Class 3A and 4A high schools will be required to use the shot clock in 2030-31 with Class 1A and 2A high schools beginning required shot clock use in 2032-33. The shot clock may be used this year in preseason games and invitational tournaments if both head coaches, agree, prior to the game. The shot clock will have a 35 second reset.
Optional use of the shot clock as part of a pilot program will continue for all classes in the years they are not required to use the shot clock. Shot clock usage also will only be required in varsity games. Sub-varsity games can use the shot clock with coaches’ agreement or with district executive committee approval for district games.
The Council also passed the proposal for home-field/home-court advantage in the first-round playoff games for team sports starting in 2027-2028. This extends the current Class 5A and 6A football rule to other major team sports, including soccer, team tennis and volleyball. Class 5A and 6A football gives the option to teams with higher district finishes to host a first-round playoff game.
The UIL also added legislation that outlines competing districts that are more than 200 miles apart must vote before the season whether to waive the home-field advantage rule. Both DECs must approve this by a majority vote.
