With dangerously high temperatures and heat index values expected across Southwest Louisiana this week, now is the time to take heat safety seriously. Extreme heat can become dangerous quickly. Here are some simple tips to beat the heat:
๐ง Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
๐งข Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat.
๐ณ Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
๐ซ Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (10 .mโ4 pm).
๐งด Wear sunscreen to help protect your skin.
๐ Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, not even for a minute.
Know the warning signs of heat-related illness:
โ ๏ธ Heavy sweating
โ ๏ธ Dizziness or fainting
โ ๏ธ Headache
โ ๏ธ Muscle cramps
โ ๏ธ Nausea or vomiting
โ ๏ธ Confusion
If you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion, move to a cool place, drink water and seek medical attention if symptoms don't improve. If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness or has a body temperature above 103ยฐF, call 911 immediately.
