Being a Progressive BIPOC woman in today’s political and social climate can feel isolating, exhausting and heavy. You don’t have to carry it alone.

I am grateful to announce that my new Peer Support Group for Progressive BIPOC Women ( and femme-identifying folxs) is a new virtual space to be seen and supported by people who understand the unique experience of being both a racial and political minority in our communities.

In this short-term peer support group we strive to

Just got back from Portugal with my family and wow—what a reminder of how good it feels to explore something new and slow down. So many of my clients describe their lives as busy and hectic. Rest isn’t just about recharging—it helps us show up better in our relationships too.

Whether it’s a trip across the world or just taking a real break at home, giving yourself time to breathe is so important. You don’t have to earn your rest.

If you’re feeling stretched thin, overwhelmed, or disconnected, this is your permission slip: slow down. Say no. Take the nap. Schedule the date. Rest is not a reward or something that needs to be earned. It’s something we just have to do.

✨About Me✨
Hey, I’m Kayla ( she/her). I am a licensed marriage and family therapy associate in Summerville, SC. I own and operate my private practice .llc where I provide couples therapy and marriage counseling.

I work with couples who are stuck in a dilemma or communication pattern. They come to me because they want to:

🌿be able to get their needs met

🌿find resolution to an ongoing issue

🌿 recover from betrayals and affairs

🌿reconnect with their partner in a way they never have before.

🌿better navigate life stressors and feel like a team

I’m a big fan of Terry Real and Esther Perel . I use elements of the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused and Relational Life Therapy with my couples.

Psychotherapist and researcher Dr. John Gottman studied couples behaviors and discovered the four behaviors that lead to couples feeling dissatisfied and at risk of divorce and separation.

Couples come to me because they want to resolve a specific issue in their relationship. They find themselves feeling misunderstood and disconnecting anytime the topic is brought up.

What we start to discover is they are caught in a cycle and a pattern of behaviors that are making it even harder on the relationship.

In therapy I coach couples on how to engage in more healthy behaviors and change their language.

Supporting your partner through difficult moments starts with making them feel seen and heard.

Dr. John Gottman discovered that couples who remained close over time were good at listening to each other’s stresses. One way to do this is by regularly have a Stress-Reducing Conversation.

Take about 30 minutes daily or weekly to discuss things from outside the relationship that may be causing each of you stress or hurt. Spend half the time listening to your partner’s feelings and half sharing your own. This isn’t the time to come up with solutions for one another or talk about things within the relationship that are upsetting you. Instead, offer empathy and understanding.

🌿 Is it normal to want to stay?
Yes, just as normal as the feeling of wanting to leave. So many couples make the decision to work through these betrayals.

🌿Are you saying affairs are good things?
Of course not, they can be deeply traumatizing for relationships. And yet Affairs can be painful catalysts for change. It forces you to look at yourself, your relationship and your partner.

🌿How do couples heal from affairs?
Healing starts with remorse and accountability for shattering boundaries . Then continues with reconnecting to yourself and your partner. Couples can then find themselves on the other side, with something new and different.
