As International Infection Prevention Week wraps up, here’s a quick recap of the habits worth carrying with you all year not just this week.🧼

This year’s theme, “Generations of Infection Prevention: Past. Present. Protected.,” reminded us how far hygiene science has come from early discoveries that handwashing saves lives, to the everyday habits we often take for granted today.

Top takeaways from this week:
🖐️ Wash hands for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after being in public spaces
🧴 Hand sanitizer works well as a backup, but soap and water is still the gold standard
🧽 Regularly clean high-touch surfaces — phones, doorknobs, shared equipment
🤧 Cover coughs and sneezes, and stay home when you’re sick
💉 Stay current on recommended vaccinations — a key, often-overlooked piece of infection prevention

Small, consistent habits protect not just you, but everyone around you.

💬 Which of these habits do you already practice consistently? Share below — we’d love to hear what’s worked for your family or workplace.

“Are you living to work, or working to live?”🎙️

In Episode 5 of The Phit-4-Lyfe Podcast, Coach Tiquita breaks down something a lot of us feel but rarely talk about: burnout isn’t just about working too much, it’s about never getting a real chance to recover.

She uses a simple picture: a vehicle stuck in low gear, engine revving nonstop down the highway. It’s still moving, but it’s overheating underneath. That’s what “always-on” work culture does to people, it’s not that you’re not capable, it’s that you never get to downshift.

One powerful finding from the research: it’s not just checking your email after hours that stresses you out, it’s just expecting you might have to. That alone is enough to wear a person down over time.

A few honest takeaways:
🧠 Burnout often isn’t a personal failing, it’s often how a workplace is structured
📴 Setting “do not disturb” boundaries after work hours really can help, if you hold them consistently
🗣️ It’s okay to have a real conversation with your workplace about expectations

Myth vs. Fact: World Osteoporosis Day Edition🦴

World Osteoporosis Day — this year’s theme from the International Osteoporosis Foundation is “Build, Protect, Strengthen Your Bones for Life.” Let’s clear up some common misunderstandings.

❌ Myth: Osteoporosis only affects older women.
✅ Fact: While it’s more common in women after menopause, 1 in 5 men over 50 will also experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime (IOF). It’s not exclusively a women’s health issue.
❌ Myth: You’ll know if you have weak bones.
✅ Fact: Osteoporosis is often called a “silent disease” there are usually no symptoms until a fracture happens. Many people don’t know they have it until it’s already caused a break.
❌ Myth: If you’ve already had a fracture, there’s nothing more to do.
✅ Fact: About 80% of people who’ve had a fragility fracture remain undiagnosed and untreated for osteoporosis — meaning there’s a major opportunity for better follow-up care and prevention of future fractures.
❌ Myth: Bone health is only about calcium.
✅ Fact: Vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol all play a real role in building and protecting bone strength.

Bone health is something we can build and protect at every stage of life not just manage after a diagnosis.

October 16 is World Food Day, a global reminder that good nutrition is the foundation everything else in our health is built on.🥗

This year’s theme from the FAO, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” speaks to something bigger than any one meal: the choices we make today shape the health we carry into the future — for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

Globally, 733 million people faced hunger in 2024 — a reminder that access to good nutrition is still not something everyone has, even as many of us are deciding what’s for dinner tonight.

A few ways to honor World Food Day today:
🥦 Choose whole, nourishing foods when you can
🤝 Support a local food bank or community garden
👨👩👧 Cook a meal together as a family — shared meals build more than just nutrition
💛 Practice gratitude for the food on your table

Whole-person wellness starts with what’s on our plate and it’s something worth both appreciating and sharing.

💬 What’s one food tradition or habit your family values? Share it with the community below.

October is Health Literacy Month — a great time to talk about something that affects nearly everyone but rarely gets discussed: how well we actually understand the health information given to us.💛

Health literacy is your ability to find, understand, and use health information — reading a prescription label, understanding a diagnosis, knowing what questions to ask a doctor, or navigating insurance paperwork.

Here’s the surprising part: more than 90 million U.S. adults have low health literacy. This isn’t about education level or intelligence, it’s often about how confusing and jargon-heavy health information tends to be.

A few things that can genuinely help:
🗣️ Ask your doctor to explain something again in plain language, it’s always okay to ask
📝 Bring a written list of questions to appointments
👥 Bring a trusted friend or family member to important appointments for a second set of ears
🔍 Double-check health information online against trusted sources

Understanding your own health is a right, not a privilege and it’s okay to ask for things to be explained more clearly.

💬 Have you ever felt confused after a doctor’s visit or when reading medical paperwork? Share your experience, we’re building a space where that’s normal to talk about.

It’s ADHD Awareness Month, and this year’s theme — “A Community of Support” is a gentle reminder worth carrying into today: you don’t have to operate at everyone else’s pace to be doing enough.

ADHD affects an estimated 15.5 million adults in the U.S., and over half were diagnosed as adults, not children (CDC). Many spent years thinking they were just “lazy,” “too much,” or “disorganized” before understanding what was actually going on.

If that’s you or someone you love, today’s reminder is simple:

🧠 Your brain isn’t broken, it just works differently
🐢 Slower, messier, or non-linear progress still counts as progress
💛 Needing more support, more structure, or more reminders isn’t a flaw
🤝 You deserve a community that works with your brain, not against it

Take today at your own pace. That’s allowed.

💬Tag someone who could use this reminder today, or share your own story in the comments — we’d love to hear it.

Mental Illness Awareness Week. This year's theme from NAMI, "Building Community: Supporting Mental Well-Being Together," is a reminder that mental health support starts with each other.💛

1 in 5 adults in the U.S. lives with a mental health condition — meaning nearly everyone in our community knows someone affected, even if it's never been talked about openly.

A few ways we can all help build that community this week:
🗣️Check in on someone, and really listen to the answer
🧠Remember mental health is health — not a character flaw or a weakness
💬Use supportive language, not labels
📞Share that help is available: call or text 988, the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, free and confidential, 24/7

You don't need the perfect words to support someone. Showing up consistently matters more than saying it perfectly.

💬Tag someone who could use a reminder that they're supported today.

Myth vs. Fact: National Depression Screening Day Edition🧠

National Depression Screening Day and depression remains one of the most misunderstood health conditions out there. Let's clear a few things up.

❌ Myth: Depression just means feeling sad sometimes.
✅ Fact: Clinical depression is a persistent condition — ongoing sadness, loss of interest, fatigue, and difficulty functioning for two weeks or more, not a passing mood.
❌ Myth: You should be able to just "snap out of it."
✅ Fact: Depression is a real medical condition, not a matter of willpower — and it responds to real treatment, the same way other health conditions do.
❌ Myth: A screening means you're being diagnosed or labeled.
✅ Fact: A screening is simply a confidential tool to understand what you're experiencing — it's a starting point, not a verdict.
❌ Myth: Only a small number of people are affected.
✅ Fact: An estimated 40 million U.S. adults experience depression or anxiety — meaning nearly everyone knows someone affected, even if it's never been discussed openly.

Screening is free, confidential, and available to anyone who wants it — no referral needed.

World Cerebral Palsy Day — a day to recognize the more than 17 million people worldwide living with cerebral palsy (CP), and to shift how we think about disability altogether.

As the quote goes: the best way to diminish disability is by removing the barriers that surround it. CP is the most common physical disability in children, caused by an injury to the developing brain but it affects everyone differently. Some people need daily support, others live fully independently. No two experiences with CP are the same.

Whole-person care means recognizing that health and wellness look different for everyone — and that "ability" isn't one-size-fits-all. True inclusion means:
🧡Removing physical and social barriers, not just raising awareness of them
🧠Supporting research into assistive technologies that genuinely improve daily life
🤝Listening to and amplifying the voices of people with CP themselves, not just talking about them
💛Celebrating achievements and capabilities, not focusing only on limitations

This day isn't about pity — it's about recognition, inclusion, and action.

💬Tag someone in your life living with CP, or someone who advocates for accessibility — today's a great day to celebrate them.

National Child Health Day — a reminder that the habits kids build early shape the health they carry for life.🧒💛

Child health isn't just about checkups (though those matter too), it's about everyday habits: movement, nutrition, sleep, and feeling genuinely happy and supported.

A few simple ways to build healthy habits early:
🏃Make movement playful, not a chore — tag, bike rides, backyard games all count
🥗Involve kids in meal prep — they're more likely to eat what they helped make
😴Protect consistent sleep schedules — it affects mood, focus, and immune health
💬Talk openly about feelings — emotional health is part of whole-child health too
🩺Keep up with routine checkups and vaccinations

Whole-person wellness starts young and it's built through small, everyday moments, not one big effort.

This is also a great reminder for working parents: balancing your own wellness with caring for a child's is real, and it matters too.
