Did you know that many children with hyperlexia have a strong fascination with letters, numbers, words, and books from a very young age?

While hyperlexic children may learn to recognize words early, they often need support developing language, social communication, and comprehension skills.

The good news? Speech therapists can use a child's love of letters and print to build early language skills! Through letter-based games, alphabet activities, favorite books, and print-rich play, we can turn a child's interests into meaningful opportunities for communication, vocabulary growth, and language learning.

When we follow a child's interests, learning becomes more engaging, motivating, and effective.

At our clinic, we believe communication is more than just spoken words ✨ We use a multimodal communication approach, supporting children through speech, AAC, gestures, play, writing, visuals, and their individual strengths and interests.

For some kids, letters and literacy are the gateway to language! By following a child’s interests like :spelling, typing, or writing words. We can create meaningful opportunities for connection, engagement, and language growth.

Congratulations Ms. Haley on being one of our amazing SpOTlights this month!

We asked Ms. Haley if something in her life was monumental in her journey to become a speech therapist:

“Running and competing was a big part of my life growing up, including being a part of my university's cross country and track and field teams. My favorite event was the steeplechase, but I also raced the 5k. Running is now something I do for fun and for exercise. While running isn't exactly what lead to my choice of career, it IS what got me through the education part.

Distance running has taught me (and continues to teach me) the importance of patience. It's taught me that progress takes time and consistency, and things often do not go as planned. This mindset has benefited me as an SLP working with the geriatric population, and now while working in pediatrics. It helps me have the patience to determine the best way to help each individual client and to be flexible enough to adapt when a session doesn't go as expected.

Slow and steady wins the race!”

Congratulations Mrs. Amy on being one of our April SpOTlights!

We asked Mrs. Amy to tell us about one of her passions and how it has translated into her work.

“My love for creating started with calligraphy classes as a teen at my local art center and has stayed with me ever since. What started with lettering turned into painting, watercolor, knitting, banners, cards, and so much more. Trust me, I can find any excuse to create something—whether it’s celebrating a milestone, documenting a cherished memory, or just making something that brings a little joy! What began as a simple hobby has grown into a lifelong personal outlet that blends perfectly with my profession as an occupational therapist.
When I was figuring out my career path, I knew I wanted to work with children, and OT ended up being the perfect mix of kids, creativity, purpose, and fun. As a pediatric OT, I get the opportunity to think of unique and playful ways to adapt tasks, shift the environment, and find just the right approach for each child.
Ultimately, creativity is at the heart of OT—helping kids learn, adapt, and succeed, and I love that I get to be part of that every day.”
