Mental Health and Nutrition are more connected than many people realize.
Did you know the brain uses about 20% of the body’s energy each day? The foods we eat can directly impact mood, focus, stress levels, and emotional regulation. Even things like dehydration, skipping meals, or too much processed sugar can affect how we feel mentally and physically.
Research also shows there is a strong connection between the gut and the brain — often called the gut-brain axis. In fact, about 90% of serotonin (a neurotransmitter connected to mood and wellbeing) is produced in the gut.
Simple habits can support both brain and body health:
✔️ Stay hydrated
✔️ Eat balanced meals with protein
✔️ Limit excessive processed foods and sugar
✔️ Add brain-supporting foods like fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and omega-3s
✔️ Prioritize sleep and stress management
At Midlands Behavioral Health, we believe in a whole-person, holistic approach to care because mental health and physical health work together. 💙
