Yesterday I had the pleasure of celebrating with two very special, unique & talented individuals - Deana | LPC • EMDR Therapist & Miranda Battle - Deana was the first intern I had the opportunity to mentor before starting my own practice & Miranda was the last intern to complete their program with Full Life Counseling. I was so happy that she chose to stay on through her LAC. Both are LPCs now 🎉🎉🎉 & Miranda is starting her own practice 💚.

It was & still is such an honor to have been able to be a part of their journeys, to witness their growth & expansion. They are two amazingly intelligent, empowered, talented & overall amazing humans. I am confident that both will continue to do great things in the world because it’s just part of who they are.

Thank you both for allowing me to guide you & to continue supporting & celebrating you. I will always happily wave my pom-poms & cheer for you & be available to offer support as needed. I am grateful to you both with my whole heart.

Today we honor Juneteenth, a day of remembrance, resilience, & liberation.

On June 19, 1865, more than 2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, & informed enslaved Black Americans that they were free. This day became known as Juneteenth & is recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of enslavement in the United States.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed is freedom denied. It asks us to acknowledge the painful realities of our history while celebrating the strength, creativity, joy, & enduring contributions of Black communities who have continued to build, lead, heal, & thrive despite generations of oppression.

Celebrating Juneteenth can look many ways: learning Black history as shared by Black voices, supporting Black-owned businesses, reading books by Black authors, attending community events, advocating for equity, & making space for honest conversations about race & justice.

May we honor this day not only through remembrance, but through a continued daily commitment to creating communities where dignity, belonging, & liberation are possible for everyone.

Doing the work to heal our wounded inner child(ren) is WORK! The work isn’t just in the recognition - that’s just a step in the process - it’s in the ways that we show up for all the parts of ourselves to acknowledge and validate what’s coming up, to gently and lovingly hold ourselves in that vulnerable space and show up the way we most needed someone to be with us back then.

When you think about re-parenting younger parts of yourself…

❓What ages and versions of you come up?

❓When do they need you most in the present?

❓How do you recognize them?

❓How do you BE with them?

❓What do they need to know about how life is currently different?

❓What do you need to do to love & protect them now that helps heal all of you?

✨ I generally start with (especially with the younger parts) “Sweet baby girl, can I hug you while you tell me about it?” For those teen and young adult years where I would have totally rejected the hug a simple “I see you and it’s okay to feel ____” helps.

✨ I let all parts of me know that not only are they safe enough because I will stand up for them and protect them from others, that I will also be accountable for how I be with them.

✨ Present me knows that not only it is safe enough to be seen, that I also deserve to be seen and heard.

✨ Present me trusts that showing up unapologetically in my authenticity is like sending up my squirrel signal (like a Bat signal but with ADHD 🤪) and that is how I create fulfillment for myself (also how I find my people).

✨ Present me wraps up all parts of myself in love, is the one who says I am allowed to rest, I am allowed to be happy, I am allowed to make mistakes and learn from them without beating myself up. That I am allowed to have needs, wants, and let people show up for me.

Aetna has updated their policy so that EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Therapy can only be provided as a covered service if the client meets diagnostic criteria for PTSD.

Despite EMDR being evidence based and proven effective for a variety of concerns, yet another insurance company is deciding that their business is in a better position than highly trained, licensed providers to work with clients to determine the most appropriate course of treatment.

Aetna considers eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy medically necessary for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
