Recent news about hantavirus may sound scary, but pet owners can take a deep breath. Dogs and cats are very unlikely to spread hantavirus to people. Pet hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils from pet stores are not known to spread hantavirus. The best protection is keeping wild rodents away from your home and safely cleaning any droppings with disinfectant instead of sweeping or vacuuming.

The biggest risk comes from wild rodents like deer mice. Hantavirus can spread through rodent urine, droppings, and saliva. If your pet brings home a wild rodent, wear gloves and a mask when cleaning it up and wash your hands well afterward.

Experts say pets rarely spread hantavirus, but rodents still pose risks.
