I started my HRT journey three years ago at the age of 47 and as I turned 50 in a few months, I feel that I am in the best shape possible because of my HRT journey.
It really was life-changing. I had been telling the doctor, since about my early 40s especially around 44, that I knew I was changing and I felt like I was suffering. The same answer was repeated over and over again by my GP at the time and my GYN, I was simply told that this is the change. There’s nothing I can do except exercise more, eat right and sleep well. All these things which are very difficult when you feel like you are in a different state of mind than you’ve ever been in before and are caused by hormone loss.
Since I have started my own journey, I have been very aware in my practice as a psychotherapist that many women 40 and up are having the same experience. Women who are going to their doctors and either are not being told at all that HRT is an option or being told HRT is dangerous. I’ve had so many women presenting to me feeling like they are literally losing their minds. They must believe they must be sick with something very serious or they want to just leave their job jobs, their families and their whole life out of fear and overwhelming symptoms. By the time I explained to them what other option may be happening and help them to seek help from hormone specialist they find that they cannot believe the drastic changes that happen and in a very quick amount of time.
HRT has notoriously been controversial due to the study that this no surgeon is referencing in the post. He explains why this old study is not relevant today. If you are looking for more information, there is a fabulous book called The New Menopause that explains all of the new research. Please reach out to your doctor or a mental health specialist, who knows about hormone replacement therapies if you believe this may be you. There is help!
