Many adults think praise is always helpful. It is not.

When children only hear “good job” or “you are so smart”, they can start to rely on approval instead of learning how to cope, try again, and improve. Over time, this can make them give up more easily, avoid challenges, or feel pressure to always be “the best”.

What children actually need is to feel seen. Not judged. Not labelled.

They need adults to notice effort, small progress, and the behaviours they can repeat. That is what builds real confidence and resilience - not empty praise.

This is a small shift, but it changes how children see themselves for life.

Logical consequences aren’t about punishment — they’re about helping a child understand how their choices affect what happens next.
When screen time becomes a daily battle, having clear, predictable follow-ups can bring calm back into the routine.
These consequences are fair, proportionate, and linked directly to the behaviour, making them far easier for a child to learn from.
Save this for later, and share with anyone who’s navigating screen-time struggles right now.

HEALTHY SCREEN HABITS

Screens can play a helpful role in a child’s life — especially for many neurodivergent children who genuinely use screens as a regulation tool, a sensory anchor, or a predictable space when the world feels overwhelming. This post is not about judgement or shame.

It is about exploring how we can support children’s wellbeing by balancing the benefits of screens with what we know about brain development, dopamine, sleep, behaviour and mental health.

Research continues to highlight the impact of heavy screen use on mood, attention, and emotional regulation, and we’re now seeing countries such as Australia moving to restrict social media access for under-16s in response to these concerns, with the UK following on.

Healthy boundaries don’t have to be harsh. Small adjustments — like no-screen mealtimes or protecting bedtimes — can make a big difference to a young person’s nervous system, behaviour, and everyday resilience.

🚨 FLASH FREEBIE — LAST DAY! 🚨
(Free May 5–7 only!)

Comment “SCHEDULE” if you want this Thought Swap poster!

Some students don’t struggle with the work itself…

They get stuck in the thoughts that show up before they even start.

“This makes no sense.”
“This is too much.”
“I’m not good at this.”

And just like that… they’re off track.

That’s why I love giving kids simple thought swaps + positive self-talk they can actually use in the moment to get back on track.

This visual is part of the Goose & Friends School Subjects + Daily Schedule Cards kit, where students don’t just see their day—they learn how to think through it.

This set helps students:
✔️ See what’s coming next
✔️ Reduce transition stress
✔️ Stay on track throughout the day
✔️ Shift unhelpful thoughts into “I can try” thinking
✔️ Build confidence through small wins

Because when kids know the plan and have better thoughts… everything runs smoother.
