Hamburg - Betty Mae McMickle, age 90, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and longtime caregiver, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 4, 2026 at Forest Manor Health Care Center in Hope. She was surrounded by the love and memories of her family whose lives she touched throughout her life.
Betty was born in Newton to the late Ethel Dodd and Harry Bathgate, Sr. She grew up in Branchville and remained deeply connected to her community and her church throughout her life. She was a graduate of Newton High School and went on to pursue a career in nursing, graduating from Essex County Community College and completing her nursing training at Beth Israel Hospital.
On August 17, 1963, Betty married Charles McMickle, and together they made their home in Hamburg, where they raised their two daughters, Jennifer and Kimberly.
Betty dedicated 36 years of her life to caring for others as an LPN at the Sussex County Homestead Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Caring for people was not simply her profession—it was a part of who she was. She also devoted herself to caring for her own parents, giving them the same love and compassion she had shown so many others.
Her faith was an important part of Betty's life. She was a lifelong and active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Branchville, where she faithfully served in many ways. She taught Sunday school and shared her love of music by playing the organ and piano for Sunday services and...

Matamoras, PA – Joan (Meyer) Lamphear, age 75, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2026 at her residence in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. Born in the Bronx, New York to the late Howard and Grace (Zwickert) Meyer, Joan was a resident of Hewitt for 49 years before moving to Matamoras, Pennsylvania.

Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished the time she spent with her family. She had a creative spirit and loved scrap booking, photography, and making collages. She especially enjoyed capturing and preserving special memories through her photographs and creative projects.

Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, William “Bill” H. Lamphear, Jr. and her children, Samantha and Billy.

Joan is survived by her son, Bryan Lamphear and his wife Erica of Hamburg; her daughter, Megan Solicito and her husband Mike of Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Delaney and Kyle, twins, and McKenna and Connor Lamphear; and Maggie, Walter and Annie Solicito, twins; her brother, Howard Meyer of New York; and her sister, Grace Sisto of New York. Franklin - Steven T. Smolinski, age 66, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Newton Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Point Pleasant, Steve was the son of the late Thomas and Joanne (Ryker) Smolinski. He was a hardworking man who took pride in being able to do just about anything. Before his retirement, he was employed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation as a crew supervisor.
Steve was a member of Christian Faith Fellowship Church. He had a wonderful mind and an incredible ability to figure things out. He often learned simply by watching others, and somehow, he could fix just about anything. His knowledge amazed those around him, and he truly lived up to the title of a “jack of all trades.” He enjoyed working and was happiest when he had something to keep his hands busy.
A true outdoorsman, Steve loved fishing and crabbing, especially because they brought back fond memories of time spent at the shore with his father, who was the captain of a boat in Point Pleasant. He also enjoyed boating, hunting, and golfing. He and his wife, Lisa, had a seasonal travel trailer in Toms River, where they spent many memorable times together with their family.

Wantage - James Ronald Serritella, 71, formerly of Belleville, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Jim was a loving husband, father, brother and son, and someone who lived a life full of music, hard work, family, and many good memories.
Music was a big part of Jim's life. He was a talented musician and was well known throughout the tri-state area for playing bass with his band, “Wild Child.” It was through the band that Jim met Barbara, who was the band's lead singer and would later become his beloved wife. Jim loved performing and the friendships, memories, and special moments that came along with his music.
Jim was also a familiar face in the Belleville community. For many years, he coached softball for the Belleville Recreation Department and also served as an umpire. Through coaching and umpiring, he was able to share his time and love of the game with generations of local kids and families. When he wasn't coaching or umpiring, he was cheering on his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.
After his father passed away in 1981, Jim took over Serritella Plumbing and Heating of Belleville and continued the family business for many years. He was a hard worker and took pride in carrying on what his father had started.

Edith “Edye” Marshall, age 91, of Vernon Township, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Bristol Glen Retirement Community on Friday, August 21, 2026.
Born and raised in Passaic, Edye was the daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Martin) Klein. Throughout her life, she called several places home, living in Wayne and Bloomingdale, Long Beach Island, and eventually making her home in the Pleasant Valley Lakes section of Vernon, where she lived for the past 27 years.
Edye was a registered nurse, a career she truly loved. Caring for others was more than a profession to her; it was something she took great pride in, and she found great fulfillment in the work she did throughout her nursing career.
A woman who loved her country deeply, Edye was very patriotic and was a proud member of the Chinkchewunska Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Wantage. She was also a member of the Vernon Seniors, the senior group at St. Jude the Apostle Church in Hamburg, and the Hardyston Seniors. She was a member of the Vernon Methodist Church.
Edye had a wonderful sense of adventure and a love for travel that she shared with her family. In 1972, when her children were young, she packed them into a pop-up camper and set out on a cross-country adventure, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Hamburg - Michael E. Hadowanetz, age 77, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at Newton Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Hamburg, Michael spent his entire life in the home that had belonged to his grandparents, a place filled with family history, memories, and a lifetime of stories.
Born in Franklin, Michael graduated from Franklin High School in 1966. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969. He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 132 in Franklin and was a former member of the Hamburg Baptist Church. For many years, Michael worked as a salesman for Northwest Building Supply in Andover before retiring.
Michael was a man who found joy in the simple things and had many interests that reflected his unique personality. He loved flowers and took great pride in growing them, filling the gardens and areas around his home with annuals. He especially enjoyed giving flowers to his wife, Taralee which was a simple gesture that spoke volumes about how much she meant to him.
Music was another great love of Michael’s. He especially enjoyed doo-wop, although his musical tastes could sometimes take an unexpected turn—he was also a fan of Miley Cyrus. He collected toy trains and coins and took particular interest in commemorative coins, including many marked with the years 1776–2026.

Wantage - Dokia Carroll, known to everyone as Pauline, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. She was 88. Born in Manhattan, New York to the late John and Kathryn (Balatsky) Cowell, Pauline grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and later lived in Woodhaven, Queens, Malverne, Long Island, and Andes, New York. She eventually made her home in Wantage, where she had been living with her daughter, Margaret.
Pauline had a long and fulfilling career with the Manhattan law firm Trubin, Sillcocks, Edelman & Knapp where she served as head of records. She took great pride in her work and was especially proud of creating and implementing an entirely new filing system for the firm. She was organized, capable, and took great satisfaction in doing her job well.
Pauline was a woman of many talents and a wonderfully creative person. She enjoyed painting, needlepoint, crochet, and knitting, often creating beautiful blankets and other handmade treasures. She especially loved decorating her home, and Christmas was a favorite time of year. She took great joy in making everything festive and beautiful for her family.

Wantage - Carla Anne Lindsay (née Candrilli), 70, passed away peacefully in her home in Wantage on Friday, August 7, 2026.
Born in Hackensack, she grew up in River Edge until moving to Sussex County in 1989. Carla graduated from Douglass College and was a speech teacher in Sussex-Wantage schools before retirement.
Carla was known by everyone for her creative passion. She made all her daughters’ clothes when they were little. She loved her gardens and decorating for every season. She loved cooking and will be remembered for her holiday dinner parties.
Carla and her husband were members and Elders of the former First Presbyterian Church of Hamburg.
Carla was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Betty Candrilli. She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, Peter; her adored children, Rebecca (Eric), Sara (Kenny), and Amanda; her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Donna Candrilli; her niece, Erin; nephew, Matt; and many cousins.

Sussex - John T. "Jack" "Jake" Moroney, age 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Newton Medical Center.
Born in the Astoria section of Queens, New York, John was the son of the late Thomas R. Moroney and Rosalie (Waders) Moroney. He later made his home in Sussex Borough, where he became a familiar and friendly face to many.
John retired from Picatinny Arsenal, where he worked as a draftsman for many years. While he was dedicated to his career, it was his generous heart and kind spirit that truly defined him. Known to family and friends as "Jack" and "Jake," he always put others before himself and was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone. He never met a stranger, striking up conversations wherever he went and leaving with a new friend.
John found great joy in music, especially the Beatles. He loved playing his guitar, and it became a familiar sight for neighbors to see him sitting on his porch sharing music with anyone who happened to pass by. John had a lifelong passion for cars and NASCAR. He also had a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats. He faithfully cared for the stray cats that gathered around his home, making sure they were always fed and looked after.

Dingmans Ferry, PA – Arlene L. Bosland, age 79, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026. Born in Sussex, New Jersey, at the former Alexander Linn Hospital, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Dorothy (Hughes) Hill. Arlene grew up in the Sussex- Wantage area and attended the Wantage School through the fourth grade before continuing her education at Avenue Station School, a two-room schoolhouse in Lake Walkill. She later attended Vernon schools for three years and graduated from Sussex High School in 1964.

Arlene was a hardworking and dedicated woman who took pride in her career. She worked for Singer Kearfott in West Paterson for 16 years before beginning her career with Selective Insurance in Branchville. She worked there as a Senior Data Entry Operator and retired in 2012.

Arlene enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She loved playing bingo, enjoyed going to the casino, and liked to read. While living in Wantage, she was a member of the Sussex Over 50 Club. She was loved by many and will be remembered for the friendships she made and the many memories she shared with those around her.
