A New Jersey man spends his nights flying drones to help find missing pets.

His name is Michael Parziale.

He uses thermal-imaging drones that can detect body heat in darkness, making it easier to spot animals hiding in woods, fields and other hard-to-search areas.

Over time, his team has helped reunite more than 120 lost animals with their families.

Some searches take hours.

Others are incredibly fast.

One missing dog was reportedly found in just six minutes.

Another was located after being gone for more than a day.

Parziale started the U.S.A.R. Drone Team to use technology for something simple.

Getting people’s pets back home.

For families who have no idea where their animal has gone, that little glowing shape on a thermal camera can mean everything.

Most people use drones to take photos.

He uses them to bring families back together.

The Wallowa Valley in present-day Oregon was the ancestral homeland of the Nez Perce until their forced removal in 1877, a decision that led to Chief Joseph's desperate flight toward Canada and ultimately to permanent exile from this exact landscape.

Some Appaloosa horses, the breed the Nez Perce had developed through generations of careful selective breeding, remained in the region after that removal, some eventually returning to a wild state in these same mountains their original owners were never allowed to return to themselves.

These herds represent a quiet, living continuity in a landscape otherwise defined by profound loss, animals still carrying the genetic legacy of Nez Perce horsemanship, grazing in mountains that remain part of Nez Perce identity and memory even without the return of the people themselves.

Each generation grows up with a more depleted environment and calls it normal, simply because it's all they've ever known. That's shifting baseline syndrome—and it's quietly reshaping what we think a healthy ecosystem looks like.

Walk through a forest today and it might seem fine. But thirty years ago that same place had twice as many birds, wildflowers, insects. If you never saw that version, you don't feel the loss. The degradation becomes invisible because it's gradual. We accept less and less without realizing we're accepting less.

This matters because lower expectations mean less urgency to protect what remains. Fewer people push back against further decline when they've never known anything better.

Intergenerational conversations help. Hearing from older generations about how nature used to look sharpens your awareness of what's changed. Direct time spent outdoors does the same—you start noticing patterns, absences, shifts in wildlife and plants. Knowing the past becomes the foundation for restoring it.

This earliest stage of the horse and family relationship rarely gets attention compared to more dramatic moments like training or racing, yet it represents the true foundation of the deep, lifelong bond between Plains families and their horses.
