This Memorial Day Weekend, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their legacy lives on in the freedoms we enjoy each day.

As families gather this weekend, may we all take a moment to reflect with gratitude, remember with pride, and cherish the memories of those who served.

From all of us at Collins Funeral Home, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to our veterans, military families, and the heroes we remember this Memorial Day.

Donald “Donnie” Gene Cyrus, 49, of Wharncliffe, WV departed this life on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Charleston Area Medical Center General Division in Charleston, WV. He was born on March 4, 1977, in Man, WV and was the son of Loretta Cyrus and Keith Johnson, and paternal father, William Cyrus.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Angie Cyrus; paternal father, William Cyrus; and nephew, Austin Coleman.

He had a God-given gift for drawing, and with a pencil in his hand he could turn plain paper into something special. He never met many strangers and could cut up and joke with the best of them. He loved making people smile and keeping spirits high. His laugh and sense of humor could brighten even the hardest days. He loved the outdoors and felt most at home in the hills, hunting in the woods or fishing on the water. More than anything, he was a giving man. He would help anybody he could, never asking for much in return. That giving spirit stayed with him until the very end. In his final act on this earth, he chose to be an organ donor, giving others a second chance at life.

Those left to cherish his loving memory includes his mother, Loretta Cyrus (Keith Johnson); two sons, Donovan Cyrus and Michael Cyrus; brother, Kenneth Cyrus; sister, Billie “BJ” Cyrus; half-sister, Billie Jean Smith; granddaughter, Maliah Cyrus; nieces, Samantha Kinser and Jacey Harris; nephew, Carl Brewer, III.; special friends, Erica Stanley, Brandon “Greaser” Morgan, Virgil “Lum” Lester, Michelle Cooper, and David Sparks; and a host of other family and friends who will all love and miss him.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Freedom Full Gospel Assembly at Horsepen, WV with Pastor Cab Wolford officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Alum Cemetery in Glen Alum, WV. Pallbearers will include Carl Brewer, Jr., Wesley Marsingill, Brandon “Greaser” Morgan, Kenneth Cyrus, Jackie Sheppard, Billy Donley, Jr., and David Breeding. Honorary pallbearers will include Virgil “Lum” Lester, Donovan Cyrus, and Michael Cyrus.

A visitation will be held two hours prior to the funeral service at 11:00 am.

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved Sammy "Sam" Allen Carper. Born on March 7, 1934, in Switzer, West Virginia, Sam peacefully left this world on May 22, 2026, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.

Sam was born to Andy and Retha Carper 92 years ago. His parents instilled in him the values of service to God, kindness, hard work, and a deep love for family. He was predeceased by his siblings Ethel May Hatfield, Betty Jane Lyall, Mildred Rae Thompson, Daniel James Carper, Andy Carper Jr, Linda Joyce Chase, and Larry Benton Carper, who have undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms into Heaven.

Surviving him is his wife, Frances Steele Carper and his children Rena (Doug) Bordea, Sammy Carper Jr., and Barbara (Darren) Elder. Sam's grandchildren, Zach (Elly) Bordea, Reed (Ashley) Elder, and Deanna (Nick) McGhee, and sixteen great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his sisters Rainelle Browning, Maxine Winters, and Lorraine Carroll, as well as many loving nephews and nieces.

Sam answered the call to serve his country with honor, serving with the Army in Germany from Aug 1954 with an honorable discharge in July 1956. His dedication to service extended beyond his military career into his professional life, where he had many different types of employment in and around Logan. Sam found his true calling in retail, working initially with Dollar General before realizing his dream of having his own business. He successfully ran a gift catalog store named Wenders on Dingess Street in Logan, which later moved to the Rita Mall. After the closing of the Rita store, he opened Carpers, a gift and jewelry store in downtown Logan. Sam's tireless dedication to his community was evident in the beautiful gifts he offered and the genuine care he showed each customer.

A Christian, Sam was a member of the Mill Creek Church of God, keeping the Bible and God's teachings close to his heart. He was a beloved Sunday School teacher to various age groups, making a difference in the lives of many. After moving to St. Albans, he attended Cornerstone Church of God in Nitro WV where he also served as a Sunday School teacher. His spiritual home Church remained as Mill Creek Church of God, which he visited whenever possible.

Sam's love for debate was one of his greatest gifts, whether discussing the intricacies of the Bible, politics, or current events. Yet, he was gentle and caring, always approaching conversations with facts, kindness and respect. His family was a priority, and he cherished every moment spent at family picnics and reunions, where eating and sharing conversations were his greatest joys.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Veteran’s Administration Homebase service for providing in-home care during Sam's last few years, and to the compassionate staff at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV, who offered comfort and dignity in his final days.

Though Sam's journey on this earth has ended, his spirit and love will forever live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him. His life was a testament to God and the power of love, service, and faith, and his legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched.

Sam wished to go to Heaven without any fanfair or fuss. He requested no service for his passing, and we honor him in his decision. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Sam's memory to the Mill Creek Church of God, Church of God Children's Home or Hubbard Hospice House, honoring the places that held special significance in his heart and the hearts of his family.

Rest in peace. You are healed of this life's struggle, and you can rest easy in the arms of our God. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Nancy Edith Evans, 100 years and seven months of age of Sarah Ann, West Virginia (formerly of Switzer) went home to be with the Lord on May 19, 2026. She was born on October 12, 1925, in Blackberry, Kentucky, to William Thomas Phillips and Angie Parsade Burke Phillips. Her life was a long and faithful testimony of love, service, and devotion to God and to the family and friends who were blessed to know her.

Nancy was a homemaker by calling and by heart, and she lived her life with quiet strength, grace, and steadfast faith. After World War 2, she married the love of her life, Frank Evans, in 1945, and together they shared 56 devoted years of marriage. They made their home in Switzer and built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work. Frank preceded her in death, and though she missed him dearly, she carried on with the same dignity and faith that marked every season of her life.

She is survived by her daughter and loving devoted caretaker, Rose (David) Hale of Sarah Ann, in whose home she made her residence, and by her son, Dale (Edith) Evans of Barberton, Ohio. She was a cherished grandmother to Franklin (the late Kelly) Evans, Vickie (Troy) Brown, Serena (the late Jason) Bradley, Carrie (Tony) Waller, Chris (Rachael) Hale, Billy Evans, and Mike Evans. She also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren, Tyler Evans, Zachary Evans, Andrew Bradley, Jacob Egnor, Alex Bradley, and Haden Brown, and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her special daughter-in-law, Lily Evans, and by Angie Phillips Graham, a special niece whom she considered like a daughter. The family would like to thank Dr. Radha and his staff for their kindness and dignity shown to Nancy as well as a special thanks to Donna Davis who was a loving helping hand to her and her family.

Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Evans, and by many dear brothers and sisters who were part of her large and loving family. Those who went before her include Tommy (Sadie) Carter, Myrtle Phillips, Ethel (Sid) May, Orville (Lula) Phillips, Bonnie (Albert) Hatfield, John (Ruth) Phillips, Eula (Roy) Ferguson, Arnold (Naomi) Phillips, Sherwood (Verda) Phillips, and Denny (Bonnie) Phillips. The bonds of that family were strong, and Nancy treasured the memory of each one.

She was employed for a time with the Island Creek Company Store, where she was known for her dependable nature and pleasant spirit. Yet her greatest work was not found in any occupation, but in the home, she kept the family she loved, and the lives she touched through kindness and care. She was the kind of woman who noticed when someone was in need and did what she could to help. In her younger years, she was known for always helping her friends and neighbors, and throughout her life she continued to care deeply for those around her.

Nancy was a faithful Christian and a devoted member of Switzer Freewill Baptist Church since 1950. For many years she taught Sunday School and led the young people’s group, sharing her love for the Lord with children and youth alike. Her church family knew her as a woman of prayer, encouragement, and steady faith. She lived what she believed and was a shining example of Christian love, humility, and service. Her life reflected the words of Scripture through patience, kindness, and a heart that sought to honor God in all things.

Those who knew Nancy will remember her gentle spirit, her warm smile, and her unwavering devotion to her family. She was a blessing to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, church family, and neighbors. Her life was rich in the things that matter most, and her legacy will continue through the generations she loved so dearly. Though she has departed this earthly life, the memory of her faithfulness and the example of her Christian walk will remain in the hearts of all who loved her.

Now Nancy rests in the peace of her Savior, reunited with her husband and loved ones who have gone on before. Her earthly journey is complete, but her influence lives on in the lives she shaped and the faith she shared. May her family find comfort in the promise of eternal life and the assurance that she is at home with the Lord.
