Thursday: Rainbow Relaxation 🌈

πŸ’™ Coping Skill of the Day: Rainbow Relaxation 🌈

Help your child slow down and relax their body using colors!

Ask them to:

❀️ Take a deep breath and think of something red.

🧑 Take a breath and think of something orange.

πŸ’› Think of something yellow.

πŸ’š Think of something green.

πŸ’™ Think of something blue.

πŸ’œ Think of something purple.

As they focus on colors and breathing, their body naturally begins to calm.

Wednesday: Turtle Technique 🐒

πŸ’™ Coping Skill of the Day: Turtle Technique 🐒

Sometimes children feel so angry or frustrated that they don't know what to do.

Teach them to be like a turtle!

🐒 Stop.

🐒 Pull into your "shell" (hug yourself or tuck your head down).

🐒 Take 3 deep breaths.

🐒 Think about a solution.

🐒 Come back out when your body feels calm.

This skill helps children learn self-control and emotional regulation.

πŸ’š Even grown-ups can use the Turtle Technique!

Tuesday: 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding 🌈

πŸ’™ Coping Skill of the Day: 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding 🌈

When children feel worried, nervous, or overwhelmed, grounding can help bring their attention back to the present moment.

Try this together:

πŸ‘€ Name 5 things you can see.

βœ‹ Name 4 things you can touch.

πŸ‘‚ Name 3 things you can hear.

πŸ‘ƒ Name 2 things you can smell.

πŸ‘… Name 1 thing you can taste.

This activity helps calm anxious thoughts and encourages mindfulness.

πŸ’š Practice it at home, in the car, or before bedtime.

This week we are focusing on a coping skill a day! Come back each day to find the newest coping skill! Let's help regulate!

Monday: Balloon Breathing 🎈

πŸ’™ Coping Skill of the Day: Balloon Breathing 🎈

When big feelings feel overwhelming, balloon breathing can help children slow down, calm their bodies, and regain control of their emotions.

✨ Here's how it works:

πŸ”Ή Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose (imagine you're filling up a balloon).

πŸ”Ή Hold your breath for a second.

πŸ”Ή Slowly breathe out through your mouth (let the balloon go).

This simple coping skill can help reduce feelings of stress, worry, frustration, and anger.

πŸ’š Encourage your child to practice balloon breathing when they are calm so it's easier to use when big emotions show up.

πŸ’™πŸ’š A Message from Mending Hearts Counseling Center πŸ’šπŸ’™

Our hearts are with everyone affected by the tragic events at the Old West End Festival. We extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, friends, first responders, and all members of our community who have been impacted.

In the aftermath of traumatic events, it is normal to experience a wide range of emotions, including fear, sadness, anger, confusion, anxiety, or even numbness. Children, teens, and adults may each process these events differently.

As we come together as a community, we encourage everyone to be gentle with themselves and others. Take time to check in on loved ones, listen without judgment, maintain routines when possible, and seek support if emotions begin to feel overwhelming.

Remember:
β€’ It is okay to not be okay.
β€’ It is okay to take a break from the news and social media.
β€’ It is okay to ask for help.

Healing happens through connection, compassion, and support.

At Mending Hearts Counseling Center, we are committed to supporting children, families, and individuals as they navigate difficult emotions and experiences. If you or someone you love is struggling, please know that you do not have to face it alone.

Together, we can begin to heal.

πŸ’™ Compassion. Connection. Healing. πŸ’š
