Most people have never heard of the Paulownia tree, but it may be one of the most fascinating woods on Earth.

Known as one of the fastest-growing hardwoods in the world, a Paulownia tree can often be harvested in just 6–12 years. Despite its rapid growth, it produces an incredibly stable, straight-grained wood that has been prized for centuries in Japan and China for fine woodworking and musical instruments.

What makes it so special?

• Exceptionally lightweight
• Outstanding strength for its weight
• Naturally resistant to warping
• Extremely resonant
• Beautiful straight grain

As a drum builder, this has me excited. Based on its physical characteristics, I speculate that a Paulownia shell could produce a very quick attack, warm tone, and exceptional resonance because of its extremely low density.

That said, this is only speculation at this point. I haven’t built my first Paulownia drum yet. I believe the real test happens when the wood is turned into an instrument and put in the hands of a drummer. That’s when the wood tells its own story.

I’m looking forward to building my first Paulownia shell and comparing it side by side with reclaimed cypress, maple, pine, and the other woods I’ve worked with over the years. Sometimes the science predicts the sound—and sometimes a piece of wood surprises you.

That’s one of the things I love most about building drums: every species has its own voice, and every build teaches me something new.
