At 15 years old, Mason feels at his best when he’s building Legos, watching anime or playing video games. He’s a curious, creative type who dreams of growing up one day and bringing stories to life.

Mason’s family always knew his heart journey would include multiple surgeries. What they didn’t know was how many, or when.

Tetralogy of Fallot is a complex congenital heart defect requiring expert cardiac care throughout childhood. Before most teens experience their middle-school graduation, Mason had already undergone multiple cardiac procedures, including three open-heart surgeries.

In 2026, Mason and his cardiology team wrote a new chapter in that story when he became the first patient at the new Mary Bridge Children’s Heart Center to receive a percutaneous transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement surgery, placing a new heart valve using existing blood vessels.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to rally around children and families touched by cancer. In the past, Mary Bridge Children’s has amplified patients’ and providers’ perspectives on what to say and do when a friend or loved one has cancer, how some oncology families build community, how our oncologists find hope and what survivors face as they reinvent their future.

A common thread in these stories is how one person’s illness affects entire families. Children, who depend on their family for everything, are highly sensitive to the shifts in moods, routines and relationships that can happen after a serious diagnosis.

“The most important thing we can do is create a safe space for children to ask questions and express their feelings honestly. Not sharing the difficult content of the illness does not spare the child from feeling scary feelings or thoughts. Children can surprise us with resiliency when we provide them with truthful, age-appropriate information,” says Lisa Duke, MSW, program coordinator for the Bridges Center for Grieving Children.

Mary Bridge Children’s Urgent Care at James Center recently celebrated its first year of serving patients and families. Along with providing compassionate care during thousands of visits, the team created a welcoming experience through special activities and celebrations.

A special highlight from the year was a donation to the Mary Bridge Foundation made in honor of the care provided to a local family.
