Wildfire smoke is impacting over 100 million Canadians and Americans this week. Poor air quality can worsen dysautonomia symptoms by impacting respiration.

Here are some steps you can take to protect yourself from wildfire smoke:

1- check AirNow.gov and watch local weather to be aware of air quality concerns in your area

2- stay indoors when possible if there is smoke in your area; close windows and doors

3- use indoor HEPA filters you already have or build a simple Corsi-Rosenthal box to clean indoor air (here’s a “how to” video from the UC Davis professors who invented Corsi-Rosenthal boxes as a way to clean indoor air economically during prior wildfire seasons in California: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hIuH-2naozI&t=20)

4- wear an N95 or KN95 respirator mask if you have to be outdoors when the smoke is present

5- moisturizing eye drops may help if your eyes are burning from the smoke

6- saline nasal spray may help if your sinuses are irritated by the smoke

7- breathing in warm steam from a cup of tea or soup, or a steamy shower, may help with lung irritation. Make sure it’s not too hot.

8- if you are running air-conditioning in your home or car, set it to recirculate indoor air, rather than draw in new air from outside

🚨 BREAKING NEWS FROM CDC 🚨

Today, the CDC released a historic new report on Alpha-gal syndrome—the potentially life-threatening allergy linked to tick bites.

In a 10-state study of blood donors, CDC found that 24% of people age 16 and older in the five highest-impact states had antibodies to alpha-gal.

The highest estimated rates were found in:

• Arkansas: 31.2%
• Missouri: 26.0%
• Virginia: 22.8%
• Kentucky: 22.7%
• Tennessee: 21.5%

That means nearly 1 in 3 adults in Arkansas tested positive for alpha-gal antibodies.

Alpha-gal syndrome can develop after certain tick bites and may cause delayed, severe allergic reactions to mammal-derived products including beef, pork, lamb, dairy, gelatin, and some medications.

Importantly, a positive antibody test does not automatically mean someone has Alpha-gal syndrome. A diagnosis requires symptoms and evaluation by a healthcare provider. But these findings show just how widespread alpha-gal sensitization may be in areas with high tick exposure.

This is not just a food allergy issue. It is a growing tick-borne public-health crisis that demands stronger surveillance, physician education, research, prevention, and support for patients and families.

One tick bite can change a life.
