✨ let’s talk about NITROUS ✨
It’s often talked about like it’s a “lesser” pain relief option, but nitrous oxide is actually a pretty fascinating tool in labor.
Here are a few things every doula should know:
🤍 It works quickly. Most clients start feeling the effects within about 30–60 seconds, which is why timing matters. Encourage them to begin breathing it before the contraction reaches its peak.
🤍 It leaves the body quickly. Within a minute or two of stopping it, the effects are largely gone. That means clients stay mobile, alert, and in control.
🤍 It doesn’t numb labor. Contractions still hurt. Nitrous changes how the brain processes them, often making them feel more manageable or helping clients care a little less about the intensity.
🤍 It reduces anxiety. For many laboring people, this is the biggest benefit. Feeling calmer can make coping with contractions much easier.
🤍 The client controls it. They hold the mask themselves and decide when to use it. If they let go, they’re no longer breathing the gas.
🤍 It can be used in lots of situations. During cervical exams, IV placements, membrane sweeps, laceration repair, manual placenta removal, or throughout labor - it’s not just for contractions.
🤍 Not everyone loves it. Some clients say it’s amazing. Others feel dizzy, nauseated, or simply don’t notice much difference. Like every comfort measure, the response is individual.
As doulas, our role isn’t just knowing that nitrous exists - it’s understanding how to help clients get the most out of it. Coaching their timing, reminding them to take slow, deep breaths, helping them stay relaxed, and continuing hands-on support can make a huge difference.
Nitrous isn’t magic, but, for the right client, at the right time, it can be an incredibly valuable part of their labor toolkit.
♥️ Doulas: Have you noticed a “sweet spot” for when nitrous seems to work best for your clients?
