Life should be more than eat - work - sleep - repeat.

Sometimes (fairly often, TBH) that’s what my life feels like. Finishing one task takes me directly to the next task. (Yeah, adulting…)

I’ve been seeing more talk about side quests. Growing up with Dungeons & Dragons (on paper and pencil), I know well about side quests.

But as a slightly more than middle-aged adult, I have to think back a few years to my youth. Side quests are fun. Side quests can develop more skills you might need later on in the main quest. They’re often less a financial reward and more of a skill, talent, or tool development.

So I’ve decided on a totally random-ish, out of character side quest for me…

Mt Everest is 29,031 ft above sea level. I said 29,029 in the video but apparently they have remeasured the mountain…

I’m only at the gym 2-3 times per week so this is going to take a while, but I’m going to accumulate that amount of elevation change on the Stairmaster. I either need to go more often or spend more time on the Stairmaster to speed up my progress but that’s not really the point.

I have a side quest. It’s going to get me in a little better shape and pushes me to do something that’s not really on the top of my list. (Hence, some perservence and discomfort.)

Who else wants to do a side quest of their own?

Version 2.0 of my online Men's 12-Week Coaching program.

If you're over 50, then you are either headed towards a crisis, in a crisis, or coming out of a crisis; personal, family, business, community, or any combination.

These aren't events you can white knuckle and come out for the better. Survival isn't enough because it's going to happen again as we get older.

More to follow. For now, hit Like and let me know if you're interested. Post "INTERESTED" and I will keep you up to date.

Six apps that do the same thing. A password manager you don't trust. A phone reminding you about things you already remembered.

Nobody tells the guy who's run a business for thirty years the actual problem: you're not bad at technology. You're the target market for an industry that makes money every time you start over.

Harvard Business Review tracked it in 2022 — the average worker toggles between apps and websites around 1,200 times a day. That's roughly 9% of the work year. Re-orienting. Every new tool restarts the clock, and you never clear the learning curve because you keep buying a new curve.

New program in January. Different one by March. Creatine, then the greens powder, then whatever the podcast guy is pushing. Six weeks in — before adaptation ever shows up — you switch.

You don't have a knowledge problem. You have more information available to you than anyone in history. You have an ex*****on problem, an accountability problem, and there is nothing you can purchase that fixes it.

𝗕𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀, 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀:

One in, one out. New app, kill an old one. New supplement, drop one you can't defend out loud.

Twelve weeks before you judge anything. Program or software.

If you can't teach it to someone else, you don't own it yet.

Turn off the interruptions. The notifications, and the accounts selling you the next thing.

The 1965 version of you had one gym, one doctor, and a rotary phone. He wasn't smarter. He just wasn't offered an exit every six weeks.

Master the basics. Then add.

That's where Rachel was when we started working together.

She had found a nutrition plan that was helping her lose weight, but she was worried about losing muscle, rebuilding strength, and exercising safely with long COVID and a family history of heart disease.

She also admitted something a lot of people feel but don't always say:

➡️ Gyms made her uncomfortable.

Instead of throwing her into a generic workout program, we built a plan around 𝘩𝘦𝘳 goals, 𝘩𝘦𝘳 body, and 𝘩𝘦𝘳 pace.

The result?

• She maintained and rebuilt muscle while continuing to lose weight.
• She improved her strength and performance on the softball field.
• Most importantly, she gained confidence in what her body could do.

One of my favorite things she said was:

"𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘥 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘥𝘰."

That's exactly how I believe personal training should work. Every client is different, and every program should be too.

Thank you, Rachel, for trusting me with your fitness journey and for sharing your experience.

If you've been putting off strength training because you're intimidated, unsure where to start, or worried about working around health concerns, let's have a conversation. You don't have to figure it out alone.

What motivates you to work harder?

Yesterday, it was laziness of sorts. Counterintuitive but true.

When I got to the gym yesterday, I was already having the mental dialog of how hard I was ready to work.

Lazy brain sees that someone failed to put the bench press back and the rack was already set at my squat height. Bonus for laziness! Let’s use this station!

But once I was all kitted and warmed up, I noticed there were no safeties on this station and I was planning to go a little heavier.

Hmmm… strip everything down and move to another station or slack off of your session?

Nah…. Let’s go for it and try not to die or seriously break something. What’s the worst that could happen, right?

Working sets were a doubles at 325. Probably a 6.5 or 7/70. Backdown sets went great.

All went well. I feel pretty rested today.

Sometimes ya’ gotta take the safeties off!!

I keep my client activities pretty quiet. One of the great things about having your own studio is that no one else sees you training.

The flipside is that you (the public) don't get to see or hear of the great things some of my clients do.

It's a fair bet that you, or someone you know, would benefit from my coaching. That's not boasting. It's a statistical fact.

Jurgen is in his 80s and has been working with me for about 8 years. To say that he is a pretty amazing guy would be an understatement! (And his wife is awesome as well!)

How can I help you today? Hit like and reply or DM me.

I realize the mention of Hyrox will be triggering and traumatizing to some of my coaching friends....

I don't do Hyrox, but I do have an InBody in my studio. If you're interested in getting your body composition done, let me know!

Here’s a little tidbit on how your brain works and how it can work for you or against you: neuroplasticity.

Your brain (and body) love homeostasis. Remaining in balance, remaining in the known and safe.

Negative thoughts and behaviors become ‘normal’ or ‘safe’ over time. They may become ingrained as your identity.

Newer healthy and positive thoughts or behaviors are unfamiliar and clash with your established identity. The brain will resist this as it is counter to your established identity.

It takes time to establish a new identity with those new thoughts and behaviors. Expect resistance. Understand that is also your brain growing and changing.

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

I strongly believe in celebrating the success of others. I reshare posts from friends on a regular basis.

I’ve also built a career around helping others become better versions of themselves.

It’s super awesome when the two converge. Share a friend’s success and help others be better.

NIck Lambe runs a public speaking workshop. In fact, I was in one of his early speaking cohorts. He will be in the greater Tacoma (well… Graham…) area in a few weeks.

If you’re in the fitness industry, you need to be able to comfortably speak to others. It’s a skill we all seem to be losing.

I’m including a sign up link in the comments.
