Your Academy at Work.

This is an important win for nutrition care, and for the RDNs and NDTRs delivering that care every day.

Beginning in 2028, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will require hospitals participating in its Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program to report the Academy-led Malnutrition Care Score (MCS).

The MCS looks at whether hospitalized adults receive four essential steps in malnutrition care:

• Malnutrition risk screening at admission
• Nutrition assessment for patients identified as at risk
• Documentation of a malnutrition diagnosis
• A nutrition care plan for patients identified as malnourished

For RDNs and NDTRs, this decision reinforces an important point: nutrition care belongs at the center of the clinical team.

RDNs bring the specialized expertise needed to assess malnutrition, develop nutrition interventions and work alongside the healthcare team to support diagnosis and treatment. NDTRs play an important role in screening, monitoring and patient education in collaboration with RDNs and interdisciplinary teams.

With more than 3,000 acute care hospitals participating in the CMS program, mandatory MCS reporting creates a stronger framework for making nutrition care a consistent part of hospital quality.

This milestone reflects years of Academy leadership, research and collaboration across our profession.

Thank you for completing the action alerts challenging the Department of Education’s RISE rule.

On June 24, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted in part and denied in part the request for preliminary relief challenging the Department of Education’s RISE rule.

The Bottom line: The court significantly weakens DOE’s restrictive framework and reopens the door for broader “professional degree” recognition – including nutrition and dietetics – but the decisive classification question and financial constraints remain unresolved.

Institutions and students are likely to face ongoing uncertainty as the Department reassesses classifications and issues guidance ahead of implementation, particularly given the compressed timeline and high stakes associated with student loan availability.

The Academy will continue to advocate for the inclusion of Nutrition and Dietetics graduate degrees in the definition of professional degree.
