One of the things I often hear from clients with symptoms of ADHD is, “I do my best work at the last minute.” I understand why it feels that way because once the deadline is close enough, the urgency finally helps the brain engage. The assignment gets finished, the presentation gets done, and it feels like the pressure was necessary. But when we look closer, it usually wasn’t their best work. It came with unnecessary stress, late nights, missed sleep, rushing, self-criticism, and often work that didn’t reflect what they were actually capable of. My goal in therapy isn’t to help someone become better at waiting until the last minute. It’s to help them build strategies that allow them to start sooner, reduce the stress, and produce work they’re proud of without relying on crisis to create momentum.
