"How much screen time is too much?" used to have a simple answer. Not anymore.

The American Academy of Pediatrics updated its guidance this year, and it's less about counting minutes and more about three questions: What are they watching? Are you watching it with them? What is screen time crowding out?

Swipe through what's actually recommended by age, plus the AAP's 5 Cs for thinking about media as a family.

None of this is about getting it perfect. Small changes count, like watching one show together instead of handing over the tablet solo.

Questions about screens and your kid's age? Bring them up at your next visit.

📚 New in our waiting room: a free little library!

Take a book, leave a book. Simple as that.

Whether you're waiting for a checkup or just need something to keep little hands busy, stop by and grab a read. Have a book at home your kid has outgrown? Bring it in and pass it along to another family.

Reading together is one of the best things you can do for your kid's development, and we wanted to make it a little easier for families in our waiting room.

Come check it out at your next visit!

Every parent has Googled this at some point.

We put together the milestone questions we hear most in the office, broken down by age, so you know what's typical and what's worth flagging at your next visit.

A few kids hit these early. A few hit them late. Most of the time, it evens out. But if something on this list has been on your mind, don't sit with the wondering. That's what we're here for.

🚨 New Florida Law Alert for Student-Athletes & Parents 🚨

Starting July 1, 2026, Florida law requires an EKG (ECG) in addition to the standard sports physical for certain student-athletes to compete in FHSAA-sanctioned sports.

Who this applies to:
âś… All incoming 9th grade student-athletes
✅ Students in grades 10–12 who have never participated in an FHSAA-sanctioned sport before

Who this does NOT apply to:
❌ Middle school students
❌ Students who have already participated in an FHSAA sport in a previous year

Good to know: An EKG done for any reason since August 2024 meets this requirement — no need to repeat one if you already have results on file. If an EKG shows abnormal findings, the student cannot participate until they receive written medical clearance.

Leon County Schools — along with other public, private, and charter schools across Tallahassee and Florida — is partnering with Who We Play For , a nonprofit offering low-cost heart screenings for student-athletes.

Don't wait until the season starts — get this checked off the list now so your athlete is cleared and ready to go! 💙

Why do newborns need the vitamin K shot?

It is a question more parents are asking, and one every parent deserves a clear, evidence-based answer.

Newborns are naturally born with very low levels of vitamin K. Their bodies need vitamin K to form blood clots and prevent serious bleeding. That is why the vitamin K shot has been a standard part of newborn care for decades.

In this reel, Dr. Nelson explains why babies are born with low vitamin K levels, why pediatricians recommend the shot for every newborn, and what can happen when a baby does not receive it.

Our goal is not to create fear. It is to provide trusted, science-backed information so you can make informed decisions for your child with confidence.

If you have questions about the vitamin K shot, talk with your pediatrician. We are always happy to have the conversation. đź’™
