A mom sat in my office last spring — her son in the waiting room — and asked me the question I hear most: "How do I get him to talk to me? I ask, and he just goes to his room."

I asked her what happens when she follows him.

"He shuts down more. Then I get frustrated. Then we argue about him not talking, which is..." She laughed. "Which is us not talking."

I've watched this loop in families for almost twenty years. Pressure closes kids down. So I gave her a different assignment: the next time he retreated, she'd say one sentence at his door — "You don't have to talk right now. I'll be in the kitchen if you want company" — and then actually walk away. Go do something. Make noise. Be findable.

She looked at me like I'd suggested giving up.

Three weeks later, at his follow-up, she caught my arm in the hallway. The first two times, nothing. The third time, he wandered into the kitchen twenty minutes later. Sat on the counter. Started talking about a video game. Then, sideways, in the middle of it — the thing that had actually been wrong for a month.

Teens almost never talk on our schedule or facing us head-on. They talk sideways, when the pressure is off and someone is simply findable. The invitation without the demand — that's the whole trick.

This is what I say in my exam room when a teen finally cracks the door open. No follow-up questions. No fixing. Teens test us with small disclosures before they trust us with big ones — and what you do in that first moment decides whether the door stays open. This is one of 5 phrases in my free guide (https://bit.ly/4wFvy0R), and the full framework behind it is in my parent course, "What's Going on With My Child?!"

A 14-year-old is on my exam table, one-word answers only. Then, quietly, to the floor: "Everyone's just been really annoying lately." That's the crack in the door. I said one phrase — "That sounds like a lot. I'm listening" — and kept doing her exam. Ten seconds of silence. Then everything. The phrase is 1 of 5 in my free guide, link in bio.
