Does 0 grams of trans fat always mean zero?

Not necessarily. Food labels can list 0 grams of trans fat per serving when the amount is less than 0.5 grams, which means small amounts can still add up, especially if you eat more than one serving.

That’s why it’s important to look beyond the numbers on the Nutrition Facts label and check the ingredient list, too. Keep an eye out for partially hydrogenated oils, a key source of artificial trans fats.

Through the LEADR Diabetes Remission Program, participants learn to read food labels more closely and make informed choices that support their long-term health.

Knowing what’s in your food empowers you to make better choices for your health.

One bottle doesn’t always mean one serving!

When you grab a soda or another packaged drink, it’s easy to assume the entire bottle counts as one serving. But take a closer look at the label, and you may find that one container actually includes multiple servings, which means the sugar, calories and other nutrients can add up quickly.

Learning how to understand serving sizes and read nutrition labels is one of the practical skills we explore through the LEADR Diabetes Remission Program.

Do you know what to look for when reading a food label?

Sometimes a product can look like a healthy choice at first glance, but a closer look at the nutrition label and ingredients may tell a different story.

In the LEADR program, participants learn practical skills for reading food labels, understanding what’s in the foods they eat and making informed choices that support their health goals. It’s all part of using evidence-based lifestyle changes to help manage chronic disease and support type 2 diabetes remission.

Is "sugar-free" always the healthier choice?

Artificial sweeteners are often marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar—but are they the best choice?

This video explores why lifestyle medicine emphasizes real, minimally processed foods over highly processed alternatives whenever possible. Rather than looking for the next sugar substitute, the goal is to build a way of eating centered on foods that nourish your body.

🍓 Choose whole foods when you can.
🌱 Focus on long-term habits over quick fixes.
💚 Small, consistent changes add up.

At the FSU Health Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, we help patients create sustainable lifestyle changes that support lasting health—not just temporary solutions.

Not all calories work the same for your body.

While calories matter, where those calories come from matters most.

This clip from one of our LEADR workshops explains why foods rich in fiber and whole ingredients can help you stay fuller longer, while refined carbohydrates—like those made with white flour—are digested more quickly, often leaving you hungry sooner.

Small swaps can make a big difference:
- Choose whole grain or high-fiber breads over white bread
- Look for flours made from whole grains
- Fill your plate with fiber-rich vegetables

The goal isn't restriction—it's fueling your body with foods that provide lasting energy and satisfaction.

Learn how simple, sustainable changes can support your health through our LEADR Diabetes Remission Program.

High blood sugar isn't always just about sugar.

Did you know that what's happening inside your cells can have a major impact on your blood glucose?

In this clip, Dr. Kathleen Wilson explains how excess fat stored in cells can make it harder for glucose to enter where it's needed. When cells become "full," glucose stays in the bloodstream, contributing to elevated blood sugar levels.

Understanding why this happens is the first step toward making meaningful lifestyle changes that can improve your health.

Interested in learning more? Our LEADR Diabetes Remission Program helps participants build sustainable habits that support healthier blood sugar through nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and more.
