Last week I attended the Strategic Partners Happy Hour at Miller’s Ale House.

It's always a good time connecting with local professionals, catching up with familiar faces, and making new connections in the community. It was great seeing Barb Smith, Grey “Barbie” Blank, Maureen Famiano, and Richard Boinsvart.

Grateful for these opportunities to build relationships, support each other, and stay connected right here in Tampa Bay.

Lately, I’ve had more questions about supportive shoes, orthotics, arch supports, plantar fasciitis, flat feet, and high arches than just about any other topic.

And since so many people are asking, it’s probably time I shared my opinion.

Fair warning: some people aren’t going to like it.

Your feet were designed to move.

Not be held still.

Not be braced.

Not be wrapped in enough cushioning that they never have to feel the ground beneath them.

I know some of those shoes feel incredible. Like you’re walking on a pillow.

But comfort and function are not always the same thing.

In fact, sometimes they’re opposites.

Before anybody gets upset, let’s get one thing out of the way:

Orthotics can absolutely reduce symptoms.

There are situations where they are appropriate. There are people who genuinely need them. If you’re standing on concrete for eight hours a day trying to make it through your shift without feeling like your feet are on fire, symptom relief matters.

The question isn’t whether orthotics can help.

The question is whether they’re solving the underlying reason your feet needed help in the first place.

Because pain relief and problem solving are not always the same thing.

Last month, I attended the South Tampa Chamber Cheers event at Palihouse in Hyde Park, and what a beautiful little gem of a hotel.

It was a great evening of connection, conversation, and getting to experience another wonderful local spot in South Tampa. I always enjoy opportunities to meet fellow chamber members, catch up with familiar faces, and continue building relationships within this amazing business community.

A lovely setting, great people, and a reminder of why I enjoy being part of the South Tampa Chamber so much.

Remember last week when I said the bones should point forward?

This is why I care so much.

A few weeks ago we talked about muscles vs. bones and I said something that tends to make people stop mid-scroll: Your bones did not wake up one morning and decide to move.

I said what I said.

Muscles tell bones what to do. Bones are passengers. Muscles are the active fibers doing the work.

Last week we talked about why I care so much that the knees, hips, shoulders, and feet are all facing the direction they were designed to face.

Remember last week when I said the bones should point forward? This is why I care so much.

This week we’re going after one of the biggest phrases I hear as a posture therapist: “I have bone-on-bone arthritis.”

Before everyone grabs their pitchforks, I am not saying arthritis is fake.

The pain is real. The inflammation is real.

In fact, the word arthritis literally means inflammation of the joint. “Arthron” means joint. “-itis” means inflammation.

What I am asking is: Is the pain coming from the condition of the joint…or from the position of the joint?

Because those are not always the same thing.

Freedom is something we often feel in the simple moments, moving through our day, spending time with loved ones, and living with purpose.

This Memorial Day, we remember those whose sacrifices made those moments possible.

This week, I attended the South Tampa Chamber luncheon featuring a very informative panel of public servants, including Bob Henriquez, Nancy Millan, and Lisa McLean.

It was a great opportunity to hear directly from leaders who serve our community, learn more about the work happening behind the scenes, and stay connected to the issues that impact local businesses and residents across Tampa Bay. Events like this are such a good reminder of how important it is to stay engaged, ask questions, and understand the people and processes helping shape our community.

Sometimes what looks like “wear and tear” is actually a joint that has been pulled into a bad position for so long that it stopped moving the way it was designed to move.
