Steep by Steep

Hi again!

We're now almost three months into our new location and we're having so much fun! Thank you everyone for your support in and out of the teahouse. Every time you visit or tell a friend about us, a sandhill crane gets its wings! Okay, maybe not... but you do help our little flock grow.

We’re in the process of refreshing the tea menu and have been tasting lots of samples to find new teas we’re excited to share. We will be changing up the menu regularly as teas run out. There are so many teas being released every season we want to reflect that on our menu and keep things fresh.

Recently we connected with Anna Ye Tea, who works directly with Vietnamese tea producers. Tea in Vietnam has existed alongside Chinese tea traditions for centuries, but only more recently has it begun to be recognized and celebrated on its own terms. Historically, many Vietnamese teas were exported and sold under Chinese, Taiwanese, or Japanese identities. I love seeing Vietnamese tea producers claim their own traditions and craftsmanship.

We currently have two teas sourced by Anna Ye on the menu: a unique Wild Silver Needle and a Red Oolong. Stop in to try them and I’d be happy to share more about the regions, people, and styles behind these teas.

We’ve also had a few wonderful events recently, including our Mother’s Day watercolor painting and tea tasting with Lynda Fishbourn, along with our first monthly Friday Night Flight tasting event. We’re hoping to host at least two events each month and have some exciting things coming up.

June events are now open for registration!

Friday Night Flight x Nada Wine
Friday, June 12th | 5:30pm & 7:00pm
For our second Friday Night Flight we’re collaborating with Nada Wine, a local natural wine distributor that carries Unified Ferments, a non-alcoholic fermented tea beverage. These are not kombuchas, but thoughtfully fermented teas that reinterpret the character of tea leaves and transform them into a beverage designed for stemware.
I’ll be serving teas traditionally, hot and prepared in their respective teaware, while guests will also have the opportunity to sample these unique fermented tea expressions cold. We have two seatings with 12 seats each.

Chinese Paper Cutting & Tea with Jenny Zhang
Saturday, June 27th | 10:00–11:00am
Jenny will be introducing us to Chinese paper cutting, or jianzhi, one of China’s oldest folk arts and recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage tradition. Dating back to the 2nd century CE after the invention of paper, the art involves cutting intricate designs into paper using scissors or small blades. Traditionally created in red paper to symbolize luck and celebration, these works often appear during festivals, weddings, and other joyful occasions.
Of course we’ll be pairing the experience with tea, and I’ll be sharing one of my favorite green teas to celebrate the season. We currently have 9 seats left, so sign up soon if you'd like to join us.

If you have a craft, workshop, or experience you’d love to share in the teahouse, I’d love to hear from you. We’ve also had quite a few inquiries for baby showers, bridal showers, private tastings, and workshops. If you’ve been thinking about hosting an event at Noisy Crane, feel free to reach out and let's chat about creating something special together.
Hope to sip tea with you soon!

Over the next couple weeks we will be sharing the stories of our support TEAm! We work with the coolest, kindest, and most hardworking tea seekers. These small business owners travel through East Asia hiking, motor biking, and traversing difficult landscapes to find the absolute best tea producers they can. They create sustainable relationships and share the tea masters beautiful work (tea) with us creating support systems across the world.

Next up in our Communi-Tea Features is Shunyu Huang of Wild Flavors Tea!

If you’ve met Shunyu, you’ve probably shared a good laugh, a heartfelt conversation or some really good food. She grew up in Guangdong, China, surrounded by gong fu tea culture, and now seeks out wild teas to share with her community.

Shunyu has hosted many classes at Noisy Crane Tea House and helped kick off opening weekend in our new space. We’re so lucky to know her as a friend, mentor, and tea guide.

She sourced the Ancient Red, 2018 Wild Spring Shoumei, and Lao Man E Shou Pu’er currently on our menu. Come taste the wild, deep flavors of these very special teas and take a class with her next time she’s in town!

I’ll introduce all my ladies first!

Meet the ultimate tea boss lady, Ali Roth from in Berkley, CA. This woman welcomed me onto her staff back in 2017 while I was in yoga teacher training in Oakland. Before walking into her teahouse I knew nothing about gong fu cha or Japanese tea service, I can honestly say I wouldn’t have a teahouse if it wasn’t for her inspiration and training.

Ali is the full package, kind, funny, real af, a community organizer and a fighter for social justice. Want to learn how to redirect your taxes to support programs that really help people and don’t fund wars, she’s your gal!

Now a word form the boss herself...

“Blue Willow is the outcome of 20 years of tea fanaticism that has bloomed into an amazing community for all types of tea freaks. Each year, Ali travels to different tea regions across Asia to work directly with small-scale tea farmers, producers, and collectives. With an emphasis on sustainably produced teas, high quality and unusual harvests, Blue Willow is proud to offer teas for every type of taste bud. We believe tea should be accessible and served without attitude or snark. No tea bros allowed lol. All tea to the people.”

provides a lot of our most popular teas like the Black Sticky Rice, Moonlight White and Soft Branch Green tea. If you haven’t yet tried them come on in and try’em out!

PS Isn’t she beautiful! 😍

Do you want to train your palate to taste the subtle flavors and aromas in tea? Stop and smell the flowers! Spring is a perfect time to start, the flowers are popping off right now. Every neighborhood has the sweet smell of jasmine in the air.

Noticing the subtle aromas around you and cataloging them is the way we start to pick up more subtle flavors in our tea and foods. I love the smell of the warm pine needles when hiking in the pine flats, and the damp dank smells of our wetlands. All these aromas are in our teas. Flowers, fruits, spices, grasses, trees, landscapes and flavors from our favorite foods are all found on the tea tasting wheel.

Come in to our tea house and explore the subtle and bold flavors of our beautiful artisinal teas! We have room this weekend for your reservation.

What are your favorite flowers blooming right now?
