1. Worry Well: Rather than going down the imagination loop of worst case scenario all day long, make intentional time to worry well. Put pen to paper at the right time so the worries are not just running in the background aimlessly and getting your attention on demand. When journaling, pay attention to what is within your control and what is not. Note what might need a plan of action and what might need acceptance. If and when the worries return, note it, remind yourself you have already made time for that today, and return to the present moment. Don’t follow the “what if” worry each and every time it wants your attention.
2. Check Your Unrealistic Expectations at the Door: Unrealistic expectations are a set up for chronic disappointment and misery. The next time life serves you a curveball, try to be less surprised and see it as an opportunity to practice patience. After all, challenges are the price of admission to being human. Viewing hardships as your personal curriculum vs. an unfair burden can help.
3. Beware of the Comparison Traps: Comparisons bring about a competitive mindset. Being competitive in the wrong setting (such as life vs an actual competitive game) triggers our stress response, which is where we can be more hostile and reactive. Life is a personal journey not a competition and what helps us thrive in the journey is doing your personal best vs. being THE best. If you want to be more emotionally balanced, notice when your comparing mind gets activated and simply label it, “comparing.” Shift out of it like you would from noise or spam you don’t need. Unsubscribe and then refocus on what matters.
