USF Health Pediatrics & Internal Medicine/Pediatrics

USF Health Pediatrics & Internal Medicine/Pediatrics The Department of Pediatrics at the University of South Florida was established in 1972 under the leadership of Lewis A. Petersburg.

This page is for the many members of the Pediatric and Internal Medicine/Pediatrics family at the University of South Florida who dedicate their lives to caring for and protecting the children of the greater Tampa Bay community. Barness, MD, one of the outstanding academic pediatricians of his generation. Dr. Barness recruited exceptional clinicians and investigators and was instrumental in develo

ping comprehensive child health services in the Tampa Bay area. USF Pediatrics offers Residency Programs in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, and fellowship programs in Neonatology, Allergy/Immunology, and Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism. Residents and fellows in these programs receive training at the Department's two hospital partners - Tampa General Hospital and All Children's Hospital in St. The new state-of-the-art All Children’s Hospital opened in January, 2010. Tampa General Hospital recently opened a Pediatric Emergency Care Center and a Women's Center, and opened a new 85 bed neonatal intensive care unit in 2010 thanks to a generous gift from the Pamela and Les Muma family. Additional facilities where USF Pediatricians practice and teach include the USF Health South Tampa Center for Advanced Health Care adjacent to Tampa General Hospital, the Pediatric Clinic at Healthpark, and the Carol and Frank Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare located on USF's main campus; these centers opened in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The Department of Pediatrics has two programs, and nine endowed chairs, six of which were made possible by funding from the All Children's Hospital foundation and State of Florida matching funds.

From clinic chaos to core memories ✨
The Friday continuity clinic lead by our program director Dr. Dabrow celebrated the last clinic day in which all residents were going to be present. Also, had to celebrate our intern Sujal getting married next week! 🤩 We will miss our third year resident Zainab once she graduates and moves onto pediatric cardiology fellowship. ❤️

This Black History Month, we would like to highlight community organizations in Tampa Bay that are advancing and advocating for Black community health. These organizations play an essential role in health education, access to care, prevention, and community support; efforts that directly impact the children and families we serve.

We are proud to recognize:
Bay Area Medical Association () for supporting Black physicians and promoting equitable care
Center for Health Equity () for addressing social factors that influence health through education and collaboration
Sisters Network Tampa Bay () for advancing breast health education, advocacy, and survivorship support
Black Girls Run! Tampa (Facebook: Black Girls Run! Tampa) for promoting wellness, physical activity, and community connection among Black women

As pediatric trainees at the USF, learning from and partnering with community organizations strengthens our understanding of the populations we serve and supports our commitment to high-quality, community-informed care.

Know other Tampa Bay organizations doing meaningful work in community health and wellness? Tag them below so we can continue learning from and uplifting the people shaping health where we live and train.

Today’s intern spotlight is featuring the amazing Dr. Quiñones Colòn!

Jenniffer’s song choice is This is Me by Kaela Settle: “This song became my personal anthem during med school.
That journey was a true rollercoaster, and I listened to this song on my way to every exam—yes, even the Step exams. It gave me the confidence and strength I needed to push through, reminding me to show up as my full, fearless self every time.”

Not all treasure is silver or gold, some comes in the form of residency mateys 🦜☠️

It’s our favorite time of the year! Gasparilla is a 106 year old tradition where a pirate invasion arrives in Tampa Bay to take over the city and it all culminates in a parade down Bayshore Blvd ⚓️ Our residents on service had the best view and were able to watch the boat invasion from Tamp General!

We’re already counting down til next year 👀🏴‍☠️
