Someone asked me this week why I don’t attend as many home births as I used to as first call. The answer to that question is complex and long as hell but in some simple ways- it’s very easy.

This is a room full of our Tampa area midwives. And this isn’t even all of them! When I started attending births in 2008 there were barely a handful of us. Community and hospital based midwives were few and far between and we were all exhausted and trying our best constantly to keep the profession going, serve the families who needed us, and just exist.

Now?! Now, folks have OPTIONS! This is a dream come true for my mama heart that wanted to see midwifery in Florida grow and flourish. Who wanted safe options for care for any family who wanted or needed it. Home or hospital or birth center or wherever!

The really cool part? We get together like this. We collaborate. We refer to one another if there is a better fit. We ask for accountability and professionalism from our peers. We each have our own unique models and approaches and communities we serve. We might not all agree all of the time, but we recognize that if we want to move forward, it has to be centering our work and the families we serve, not our personal egos.

As a newer midwife colleague is planning our next meeting, I am feeling proud of what has grown here! Well done Tampa, happy to have seen this garden grow and grateful to still be a part of it 🌻
