Someone asked me this week why I don’t attend as many home births as I used to as first call. The answer to that question is complex and long as hell but in some simple ways- it’s very easy.

This is a room full of our Tampa area midwives. And this isn’t even all of them! When I started attending births in 2008 there were barely a handful of us. Community and hospital based midwives were few and far between and we were all exhausted and trying our best constantly to keep the profession going, serve the families who needed us, and just exist.

Now?! Now, folks have OPTIONS! This is a dream come true for my mama heart that wanted to see midwifery in Florida grow and flourish. Who wanted safe options for care for any family who wanted or needed it. Home or hospital or birth center or wherever!

The really cool part? We get together like this. We collaborate. We refer to one another if there is a better fit. We ask for accountability and professionalism from our peers. We each have our own unique models and approaches and communities we serve. We might not all agree all of the time, but we recognize that if we want to move forward, it has to be centering our work and the families we serve, not our personal egos.

As a newer midwife colleague is planning our next meeting, I am feeling proud of what has grown here! Well done Tampa, happy to have seen this garden grow and grateful to still be a part of it 🌻

😭😭😭😭

We feel the same way about our last postpartum visit.
Baby Charlie Rae and Midwife Charlie Rae 🤝 a divine meeting en utero led to this little lady being welcomed by mama unmedicated, en caul, in record time. Her mama is such a fierce human and really leaned into the intensity and wonder of pregnancy and labor.

It’s never a goodbye from midwifery care, just a see ya later💖

💦WORLD BREASTFEEDING DAY💦

I spent nearly 6 years making milk for my own babes. I could never pump much, I had to dry up my milk after my son died, I suffered through sore ni***es and clogged ducts, I’ve nursed friends babies. Lots of breat feeding stories I could share. So grateful to have been able to be a mammal in this way.

These days I support all of my clients with breastfeeding support as well as my very own baby sister and this little nursling. I will gladly hold your baby so you can take a moment away from being touched. So much gratitude for all the ways I can support human food for human babies 🫶

Why don’t we recommend testing your blood to check your hormones???

This is a hot button topic these days, especially with all of these social media marketed labs popping up promising to give you all the answers to your problems with ‘one simple test that screens for 8383738833738 markers’

Hormones in blood don’t tell us much for women. Even when testing is well timed with cycles, we glean minimal information about what is going on with someone’s endocrine system from one or two tiny vacutainers at one moment, on one day. Even a few well timed draws don’t always paint the full picture.

Saliva and urine, especially over 24hrs-28 days give us a better picture of what is happening *IF* we need to look that far.

We are of the belief around here that a root cause approach works best. We want our clients to save their money for the things that matter. We don’t need expensive lab work to know your hormones are jacked- you’ve already shared that by sitting down in front of us with a laundry list of symptoms!

Can testing inform a care plan? Absolutely. We help you build a solid foundation FIRST and THEN decide if we need more info! You have options and we’re here to help you decide what is best without spending a tiny fortune. 💸

In a perfectly Barefoot fam full circle moment, Sarah attended her last homebirth with our practice and Neli came as her 2nd midwife 🥹

Sarah’s journey with Barefoot started long before she was a student when she came into the Tampa Heights | Community Center asking about being a midwife. I gave her all the reasons she definitely shouldn’t do that BUT encouraged her that if I didn’t scare her too much AND she was insane enough, to call me if she needed a preceptor.

Luckily for all of us and the community, she IS indeed INSANE and has grown to be a truly wonderful midwife.

She leaves all of our homebirth families in the incredibly capable hands of Neli (and still me too in special circumstances!) as she works to grow her own private homebirth practice.

Anyone who has had the honor of getting to know Sarah during her time with us knows what a wonderful human and midwife she is. I have seen her grow through so many career and life milestones and I can assuredly say she can attend my birth any day (if that factory wasn’t closed.)

Thank you Sarah for being such a wonderful addition for all these years and thank you for carrying on the legacy and values of traditional midwifery. You will be missed❤️Do remember I am available for all the slaps back into reality that you may need- solicited or not 🤪

So many women walk into their visits, crumple in the chair, their eyes well up in tears, and then almost immediately they apologize for crying or warn me they’re going to cry.

Y’all. I am HONORED that you feel safe enough to absolutely fall apart in my presence. Holding space in this way has never been something I have taken lightly. It’s an honor, a privilege, and a gift to witness you in allllllll your iterations.

This week, I’ve had folks crying about how proud of themselves they are, how hard being a mom is, how tried they are, how their hormones feel like they’re wrecking their lives, and how scared they feel about the world right now.

Lucky for them- me TOO! I’ve been there, done that, am doing that, get it x10 and I am so grateful they trust me enough to witness all of it 💖 This is midwifery care, it’s full spectrum and special as hell.

A change in plans doesn’t mean you can’t have the same support. Midwifery care crosses all birth settings and we are always grateful to meet families right exactly where they are with our love, knowledge, and skills.

“I can’t say enough good things about Charlie. I was planning my second home birth when I found out my baby had some health concerns and would need to be born in a hospital. I started calling home birth midwives for doula referrals, and I was so lucky to connect with Charlie.

She truly brought a piece of the home birth experience into the hospital room. Charlie was a fierce advocate, not only for me, but also an incredible source of support for my husband. She brought a sense of peace and calm to what felt like a very unknown and overwhelming situation. I felt completely safe with her by my side.

Charlie helped us talk through every decision, making sure we felt informed and confident in our choices. Her support didn’t end after the birth either, she consistently checked in postpartum and continued to care for our whole family.

I truly can’t recommend Charlie enough. She is an amazing, steady, and calming presence. Whether you’re planning a home birth or just looking for strong, compassionate birth support, you are in the very best hands with Charlie. Her care extends beyond just mom, she supports the entire family.”

Even after 18 years of wake up calls, there is something truly magical about seeing the city fast asleep when a baby is making their way earthside.

The stillness of the air, the almost eerie quiet, the empty streets. They all feel like they make way for us to quickly make it to the side of a laboring family and watch them do their most sacred work.

A baby boy was born yesterday and Tampa grew 💙
