A few fast facts about intrusive thoughts 🚨

Intrusive thoughts are one of the most well-known aspects of OCD, but how much do you really know about them? 👀

Check your knowledge with the 3 facts below ⤵️

~ Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts that come into the mind without warning
~ 94% of the population occasionally experience unwanted and intrusive thoughts
~ Intrusive thoughts aren’t the problem, the response to them is

The last fact may leave you looking a little bit like this: 🤯

BUT this is one of the most important things to know about intrusive thoughts. Most people are able to dismiss intrusive thoughts and move on. It’s when intrusive thoughts get “stuck,” occurring frequently and repetitively 🔂 that they become a symptom of OCD.

Ways to support someone with anxiety — a few tips from us 🔽

1. Ask them what they need
2. Educate yourself on the topic
3. Communicate you care
4. Offer to help them find professional help
5. Take care of yourself too

It can be difficult to know what to say or how to help a friend who says “I’m feeling anxious.” Instead of asking “why” - try asking what they need and let them know you care about them 💙

Educate yourself on the topic of anxiety and encourage your friend to seek out counseling if they are comfortable 🛋

Make sure to take care of yourself too! Usually, we are best able to support others when we have fully cared for ourselves first 🦋

Often, our natural responses to anxiety can end up being rather unhelpful. Today we’re touching on a few behaviors that help!

Accept life’s uncertainties. Although difficult, this lets anxiety know that you do have some control - over your perspective.

Instead of trying to control your thoughts, shift your energy into practicing mindfulness. Often, staying present in the moment is more beneficial than engaging in circular thinking patterns about how anxious you are.

Avoidance equals worse anxiety. Try taking small steps toward engaging in activities you love that anxiety has infringed on.

Reassurance is right there with avoidance. What to do instead? Remind yourself this is merely a result of your anxiety. Try to resist seeking reassurance as long as you can, practicing your favorite coping skills in the meantime.

Which of these resonated the most with you? Let us know in the comments!

Coming to your feed today…quick facts about compulsions!

In OCD and anxiety disorders, compulsions are done in response to obsessions or anxiety 🤧

The facts 👇🏼
~ Compulsions are physical or mental behaviors
~ People feel forced to engage in compulsions, they don’t enjoy the behavior
~ Engaging in compulsions or accommodating someone else’s compulsions only make OCD worse

What would you add to this list?

If you find yourself asking these questions repeatedly, never being quite satisfied with an answer, it may be a sign of relationship OCD (ROCD).

ROCD is an OCD subtype characterized by intrusive thoughts and compulsive behavior around the uncertainty of a relationship.

People with ROCD experience frequent doubting thoughts about one or more relationships in spite of little evidence supporting the need for these doubts.

Although these thoughts can feel impossible to let go of, the right treatment can change everything.

ERP and ICBT are both evidence-based methods we use to help get your life back from OCD.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) causes us to experience disturbing intrusive thoughts. The reason why they are so distressing is because these thoughts are “ego-dystonic.”

This means they are judged unacceptable by the person experiencing them, and inconsistent with their values or what they truly believe.

That’s why a major part of ERP is learning that the presence of a specific thought doesn’t have to mean anything about us - thoughts are just thoughts. By learning to tolerate and detach from intrusions, we are able to re-engage with our values and be present in our lives once again.
