Looking in the mirror used to be so hard! Today, I can do it with ease, gratitude, and faith. God has truly blessed me along this journey. 10 years ago it was my hair and eyebrows. I eventually shook that insecurity off labeling it as vanity.

But in 2024 as I prepared for a double mastectomy I had to tackle the idea of living without breasts. No one has ever really talked about that in my circles… even among my breast cancer community. Such a symbol of my femininity. I knew my womanhood was not bound to breasts but the absence of them was a reality I was unprepared for.

I made a point to focus on purpose as to ensure that my physical appearance did not become an idol. You could not have convinced me that I would go without breasts for more than a year.

But can I tell you… my life has been amazing! My mental has been managed well. No haunting thoughts or challenges with self image. Just gratitude!

God has been so good to me!

This morning I heard the Lord say it was time to tell the story! As a breast cancer survivor the survivorship journey is dynamic. If not been very vocal but I’ve not hidden the experience.

In sharing the journey of survivorship, I will disclose some of the under discussed realities and how “I” processed them. One of the areas that’s not discussed is one’s self-esteem following treatment.

This picture is representative of the prosthetics I wear when working out! I never expected (or wanted) to need them for so long but what God did in me through this journey has been remarkable.

Details to follow soon. But until then let this be a prompt for you to let go of frustration, disappointment, and despondency with what is out of your timeline and focus on being intentional with the time you have!

Counseling Awareness includes knowing who does what. Do you know the difference between all of the mental health professionals' alphabets?

Dr. Simmons is a LMHC in the state of Florida. That is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. In the state of Virginia, she is an LPC and that is a Licensed Professional Counselor.

The "Dr." in her name represents her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. So, for those of you who did not know, she is not a psychologist or a psychiatrist.
