Increasing awareness of cancer control and prevention for Hispanics in the Tampa Bay Area.

In 2005, Puerto Rico’s Ponce School of Medicine and Tampa’s Moffitt Cancer Center began a collaboration known as the “Ponce School of Medicine-Moffitt Cancer Center Partnership” (PSM-MCC Partnership). The goal of this partnership is to reduce cancer health disparities among Hispanics. As part of its initiatives, the PSM-MCC Partnership’s Cancer Community Outreach Program is focused on increasing the awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and research among Hispanics. In order to achieve this goal, the Outreach Program offers free educational events for Hispanic communities in the Tampa Bay area. One of our most popular events in Tampa is “Latinos y el Cáncer”, an all-day symposium that educates the Hispanic community about cancer awareness. We also offer ¡Salud!, a series of “charlas” each focusing on a specific cancer topic, where community members have the opportunity to interact with doctors and healthcare providers in an open forum. These are just a few of the many free educational events we hold for you and your family! Join our Facebook Fan Page to find out more about our events and to share your ideas, opinions, and experiences related to cancer control and prevention!

Understanding inherited cancer risk can help patients and families make more informed decisions about their health.
New NIH-funded research found that people diagnosed with melanoma at a young age or those who develop multiple melanomas are more likely to carry inherited genetic mutations that may increase their risk for melanoma—and potentially other cancers.
These findings support one of NCI's priorities: advancing precision medicine by using research to identify risk earlier, personalize care, and improve prevention and screening strategies.

Researchers found people diagnosed with melanoma at a young age or with multiple melanomas were more likely to carry a genetic mutation linked to other types of cancer.
