Something that is not talked about enough, but is important for every mama to know who is preparing for a belly birth, is that you could experience postpartum gas or abdominal pain from an accumulation of gas in your intestines.

🤰🏼Comment and join our FREE 5-day birth experience workshop for knowledge, support, and confidence in your journey towards a positive and empowered birth. ⭐️⭐️

This is one of the most overlooked complications of having a cesarean, and there are many reasons why...

→ Anesthesia putting your lower organs in a passive state

→ Air being trapped when your provider sews up your incision

→ Being exposed to air during surgery

→ Movement of the small bowels to get a better view of the uterus

→ Antibiotics or pain relievers

In fact, a lot of mamas complain of shoulder pain from the trapped gas. This is due to having sluggish bowel movements after surgery due to the anesthesia, which may cause gas to press on a nerve that extends to the shoulder, causing shoulder pain.

I know, it's crazy to think that this all happens from having a c-section!

So what can you do to manage the pain?

1. Keep moving! Gentle exercises like walking or pelvic tilts can help alleviate gas and improve circulation. I highly suggest doing this as soon as you can start moving.

2.. Consider using a heating pad on your belly to ease discomfort and relax your muscles.

3.. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water can help prevent constipation and relieve bloating.

4. Have your provider give you an anti-gas medication.

5. Drinking tea or warm beverages- especially ginger tea can help relieve constipation and abdominal aches.

6. Chewing gum. I know it sounds odd, but there were some studies done that suggest that chewing gum 3 times a day for 30 minutes each time can help your gut function better, which in turn can help with gas.

Remember, give yourself time to heal and be patient with your body. You've just gone through a major surgery, and it takes time to recover fully.

Did you experience gas pains after having your belly birth?

Falling asleep while you're hungry is tough, regardless of your age. Our brains recognise hunger as a priority and will stay alert until the need is met. Babies should be fed when they indicate hunger. Crying is often a late sign of hunger. 😭

If a baby is hungry, they won’t go back to sleep very easily until they’ve been fed. If they nod off after five or ten minutes of crying, that’s a pretty reliable sign that they were just looking for some help getting back to sleep and not actually in need of a feed. Understanding your child’s signs is important to help you know when and how often to feed your child

Here are the 3 categories of general hunger cues that you can't miss

Green Early Sign- I’m Hungry

💚 Smacking or licking lips
💚Opening and closing mouth
💚 Sucking on lips, tongue, hands, fingers, toes, toys, or clothing

Orange Signs – I'm Really Hungry!

🧡 Rooting around on the chest of whoever is carrying him
🧡 Trying to position for nursing, either by lying back or pulling on your clothes
🧡 Fidgeting or squirming around a lot
🧡Hitting you on the arm or chest repeatedly
🧡 Fussing or breathing fast

Red Late Signs- Calm me first before feeding

❤️ Moving head frantically from side to side
❤️ Agitated movements
❤️ Frantic
❤️ Crying

While you’re trying to figure out your baby, she’s busy trying to figure out you too.⁣

A great example of just how quickly a newborn recognizes his parents, happens at the first well-baby visit. ⁣

Almost without fail, when a newborn is undressed and weighed, he’ll start to cry. I’ll try and settle the little guy by talking, shushing, and cuddling him. But if that doesn’t work, I’ll wrap him in his blanket and pass him over to his mom. The instant he’s in his moms arms, he’ll stops crying. This means a 2 or 3 day-old already recognizes and trusts his mom. ⁣

Choking hazards are the same for all kids, regardless of whether you’re doing puree feeding or baby-led weaning!

Research has shown that when parents are properly educated on how to safely serve finger foods to their babies, there is no increased risk of choking compared to traditional puree feeding (1). Knowing how to set up the feeding environment and how to properly prepare foods are key to lowering your baby's risk of choking.

We've got a new blog post outlining the nitty-gritty details of what constitutes a choking hazard, the different kinds of choking hazards, and how to modify them for safe consumption!
