Joint replacement isn’t just about age—it’s about how much joint pain is affecting your quality of life.

For some younger, active patients, severe hip or shoulder damage can make everyday activities, exercise, work, and even sleep difficult. When treatments like physical therapy, injections, medications, and activity modifications no longer provide lasting relief, joint replacement may be worth considering.

Our latest blog explains the signs that may indicate it’s time to discuss hip or shoulder replacement and why age is only one part of the decision.

Could BMAC injections help delay knee replacement for some patients with osteoarthritis?

Bone marrow aspirate concentrate, or BMAC, is an orthobiologic treatment created from a patient’s own bone marrow. It may be considered for certain patients with early-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis who are looking for a nonsurgical option to help manage pain, swelling, and reduced function.

Learn more about how BMAC therapy works, who may be a candidate, and what to expect from the outpatient procedure: https://tampabiologics.com/bmac-injections-for-knee-osteoarthritis-can-stem-cells-delay-knee-replacement/

Think of guided shoulder replacement like using GPS instead of a paper map. 🗺️ ➡️📍

With advanced navigation technology, surgeons can use a patient’s CT scan and specialized software to plan the exact position of each replacement component before surgery. This detailed roadmap helps account for individual anatomy, improve precision and efficiency, and support a safer procedure with a reduced risk of complications.

When it comes to shoulder replacement, careful planning matters.

Could getting stronger before surgery help support your recovery afterward?

Prehabilitation, or “prehab,” is a personalized exercise and physical therapy program designed to improve strength, mobility, balance, and overall conditioning before an orthopaedic procedure.

Depending on your condition and planned surgery, prehab may help strengthen the muscles surrounding the affected joint, improve mobility and range of motion, build confidence before surgery, and prepare you for post-surgery exercises or assistive devices. It may also help support a smoother return to everyday activities.

Prehab isn’t about pushing through pain. Your orthopaedic provider and physical therapist can create a safe, customized program based on your health, limitations, and recovery goals.

Every surgery comes with risks, and understanding them is an important part of preparing for a hip or knee replacement.

Complications are uncommon, but they can include infection, bleeding, delayed wound healing, or injury to nearby nerves and blood vessels. The good news is that patients can take steps before surgery to help lower those risks.

Managing diabetes, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol use, and working toward a healthier weight can all support a safer recovery.

At OMG, we view joint replacement as a team effort. Our care team will do everything possible to help you achieve a successful outcome, and your preparation before surgery plays an important role, too.
