Before surgical instruments reach the operating room, Moffitt’s sterile processing team gets them ready for patient care. From cleaning to sterilization, the full process takes about four hours, with the team preparing instruments a day ahead of scheduled surgeries.

“I beat cancer, I can run six miles.”

At 33, shortly after giving birth to her son, Kristin Bublitz was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer. But her connection to Moffitt began years earlier.

Genetic testing at Moffitt revealed that she and her mom carry a BRCA1 mutation, which increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancers. Newly married and hoping to start a family, Kristin had chosen to wait on preventive surgery.

An annual screening after her son’s birth led to her diagnosis. Chemotherapy and a double mastectomy followed as she navigated life as a new mom.

Because of her increased risk, Kristin has also decided to undergo a total hysterectomy, a procedure in which the uterus and cervix are removed. The preventive surgery is scheduled for the week after Miles for Moffitt.

Before then, she’ll take on the 10K alongside a friend and fellow cancer survivor, challenging herself and celebrating how far she’s come.

“I can’t begin to express to you what a positive attitude does for you.”

For William Sheer, support helped him maintain that outlook during treatment for small cell lung cancer.

His social worker helped him find lodging as he traveled four hours from Boca Raton to Moffitt, easing one of the many challenges that came with his diagnosis. His care team offered reassurance, and his dog waiting at home gave him motivation to keep going.

Now in remission, William rang the bell surrounded by the people who stood by him. He hopes others will find their own sense of purpose and seek support throughout their cancer journey.

Most of June Rogers’ tennis opponents had no idea she was playing with a chemotherapy pack hidden beneath her clothes.

Diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at 53, June continued competing in the sport she loved.

After her death in 2021, her tennis friends helped create the June Rogers Foundation for Colon Cancer Research to honor her memory and support others.

That legacy helped launch Moffitt’s Young Onset Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinic, where adults diagnosed with colorectal cancer before age 50 can find coordinated care, practical support and research opportunities.

June’s story continues through the people receiving care and support in her name. 💙
