Our Mission:
To bring women together in an atmosphere of friendship, generosity and community, in order to provide anonymous, short-term modest financial assistance to eligible individuals and families, seeking help for an urgent need, when it is not otherwise available. Our Inspiration:
In 2001 Washington, DC, Dr. Amy Krissoff (a physician for the homeless and working poor of DC) met with a g
roup of girlfriends for dinner one night. During that dinner she talked about the amount of money she was personally giving to many people she ran into who were in desperate need. The idea of groups of of women having potluck dinners, bringing checks for the money they would have spent for dinner, to Womenade, was born. Our Story:
We are a group of women friends in Tampa who have invited our friends to get together 3-4 times a year for a light dinner to raise money in a very simple way. We ask you bring a dish to share, and a check for $40.00 (the amount you would spend in a restaurant for dinner)
The concept is simple. Enjoy the company of old and new friends while raising money to provide local people with short term financial assistance not readily available through other resources. Requests remain anonymous and come from trustworthy sources in the community such as school nurses, guidance counselors, doctors offices and clergy. Womenade writes checks directly to the provider(pharmacy, electric company, landlord, etc.) Those in need are able to bridge a crisis, and obtain something essential. No red tape! Every penny of the money given by those in Womenade goes directly to those in need. We will keep the overhead low, and all of expenses are covered by the Board of Directors. As of today, there are more than 40 local Womenade's across the country. The founding Womenade website is: washingtonwomenade.org. As a group, the women knew if you have lemons make lemonade...if you have caring women, make WOMENADE!
